Rubeena's Craftaversary + Giveaway

My friend Rubeena is celebrating a fun milestone in her crafty life today, and so I'm helping her celebrate by sharing a project in her honor today!

I've been crafting - and specifically papercrafting - since my early teen years, so most of my crafty life took place prior to the internet. Magazines were the primary source of inspiration then - and maybe the then more prevalent TV crafting shows - like Martha Stewart, Sewing with Nancy - even though I didn't sew I enjoyed that show.

It's hard to think back to crafting before the internet, but what I do remember is I had to throw a lot more projects in the garbage. I couldn't look up how to use a product or how to do a technique, so I had to just try things, combine things, and I ended up with a lot of trash.

But whether you've been crafting for decades, or are just four years in, like the amazing Rubeena (I was NOT crafting at her level at four or even ten years!), what's most important is that enjoy those moments you spend, and I've enjoyed every one, even if they ended in pitching something into the recycle bin.

Take masking fluid for example. That was something I always screwed up because I didn't know to wait until the paper was dry to remove it, so I would get impatient and remove it too soon, and tear off the surface of my watercolor paper.

Now I know better, and that's what I'm going to show you today. You really just have to do two things. Wait for the masking fluid to be 100% dry before watercoloring, and then after you add watercolor, wait for the paper and paint to totally dry before removing it. Sounds easy if you're not an impatient person like me!

When I saw this adorable ghost set, I knew it was crying out for masking fluid. I stamped him in Versafine Clair Medieval Blue (which is very purpley) and then covered him with my favorite non stinky masking fluid that comes in a fine tipped pen style bottle. I refuse to use stinky art supplies, so I love this stuff.

After that completely dried, I sprinkled on this black powdered watercolor, and misted it with water to activate for a spooky galaxy - or, on of my favorite words - MIASMA - style background.

Then I removed the masking fluid - (video on Instagram) - and watercolored him with Quinacridone Purple and Permanent Green Light Daniel Smith watercolor. I added some no-shed glitter paper stars that I cut with this Lucky Stars die, and a strip across the bottom with the hilarious sentiment, stamped in the same ink as the ghostie.

Brownie in Girl Scouts. So over 50 years! Sewing, macrame, ceramics, candle making, jewelry, cross-stitch, & paper crafting have all been passions of mine at one time or another. Paper crafting and sewing are my favorites and are the ones I continue to enjoy.

Like you, I used magazines as my reference guide. I started
with home decor projects and gifts, ornaments ... maybe 20
years ago. Then I found scrapbooking (when it first started!),
which led me to card making.

  51. I love this card and sentiment! I have been crafting for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite childhood memories is going to the hardware store with my dad. I went to the wallpaper section and picked out all kinds of paper and paint samples, then when I got home I’d cut them up and make pictures on construction paper.

  52. This ghost is really "styling" with his unique background and fashion accessories. Thanks for sharing your crafting journey too. I can relate to those days before videos. Let's don't go back there.

  53. I have been crafting for over 45 years, starting with Artex painting and woodworking from Shop classes in school. Then my grandma taught me to crochet. I learned how to cross stitch, how to make potpourri hoops, how to sew and so much more. In 2010 I bought a BigKick so I could make some Match Game Cards for my grandchildren, and with having that, I started learning how to make cards, and now I love creating mixed media projects. I also started my YouTube channel Jan 2017 and enjoy making those.

  92. Oh what a sweet card Lydia! Love the ghost image AND your background!

Funny story: We were scrapbookers ONLY at the time.... I went to a craft store with a friend and she bought a couple pricey Hero Arts stamp sets (at the time she had a job & no kids and I on the other hand had 2 kids and NO JOB!) I said I won't be getting into THIS!!! Well, I saw a sale bin of stamps so I purchased a few mini Hero Arts stamps for "scrapbooking".... AND the rest is history, I WAS HOOKED! That was in 1999 and I have been stamping ever since! LOL
Have a wonderful day and thanks for sharing your creativity with us 'non bloggers'!

    ReplyDelete

  141. Your card looks so fun! Such a great ghost! Honestly? I'm not sure how long I've been crafting. I did some sewing when my girls were young and tried my hand at Cross stitching. I got involved in paper crafting when my sister invited me to a Creative Memories scrapbooking party probably 15 years ago. I fell in love with it and expanded my knowledge and product base as I discovered new things. I didn't really have the room for scrapbooking so I switched to cards because it took me less room to work. Now I've expanded to doing some mixed media canvases and hope to get into art journaling. I love paper crafting! There are so many great products out there. I can't figure out what to buy and what to leave because it's all great. My husband hates it when I buy products because I have so much but I just can't stop lol. I'm sure many are in the same boat.

  160. I have been crafting for as far back as I can remember and I am 62 years old. I think I was either 4 or 5 and my first project was making potholders on my loom with the stretchy bands. I think they still make those looms, but now they are out of plastic and mine was out of metal.

  166. Guess I have been creative since I was a kid. I loved sewing and made most of my own clothes up until I had kids. I discovered card-making several years ago and love it. I so enjoy these blog hops and seeing and inspiring ideas from so many talented people. Thanks.

  167. I made my first scrapbook in high school, so (gulp) about 30 years now. I've done cross stitching and some sewing but its mostly been papercrafts. I took a break from scrapbooking about 5 years ago to make a couple cards, then a couple more, and got into it big for a couple years. Now I just seem to collect stuff, only making a couple cards per year again, but still haven't gotten back to scrapbooking which was my passion for years. I tell myself I will when my son graduates and goes to college in a year, but but it will also take my computer to break or the internet to go down for weeks. I spend too much time looking at what others make instead of actually making something. Knowing that doesn't make it any easier to fix though!
