Neighbor Gifts and Why They Matter

I try to make a small gift for my neighbors every Christmas.

It's important to me to make contact during the holidays, because they can be such a hard time for people. My next door neighbor is a widow as is the neighbor on the other side of her house. My other neighbor is a single mom.

You never know what people are struggling with this time of year, and it's a time of year when people expect and welcome visitors even if it's just for a few minutes. Their homes are decorated and ready for company, and if that company doesn't come, that's sad.

I enjoy baking and making crafty packaging, or handmade ornaments for my visiting days.

One year, a neighborhood Christmas open house at my next door neighbor's house is how I found out that my across the street neighbor thought I was a murderer. It's true!

I used to do a crafty segment on the local news, and the news truck would show up at 5 AM and park in front of my house for a few hours, with cables going from the truck into my house - lots of lighting in my living room, etc.

So we were chatting at this party and this guy's wife told me that he had been googling looking for a murder one morning when he saw them. I was all - do I seem murdery????

And then I remembered that one time I rang their doorbell at 3 AM with great hostility when their car horn had been honking for an hour (the wiring in the car was jacked and if the temperature dropped below 50, the horn would start honking - and it did not wake them up, but it woke us up - for many days in a row, and I was finally pushed over the edge) and I very scarily whispered that I'd be happy to disconnect the battery in the thing permanently if he did not remedy it forthwith. But that was completely justified and does not make me a murder suspect. Especially since they quickly got rid of the car.

So this is why it's good to show yourself at the holidays and find out if everyone thinks your a murderer, and to check on your friends. It's even better to give them gifts to make them suspect you less.

So last year, I made Mason jar snow globes for everyone! These are super easy to make and use minimal supplies you might already have.

I used this size of plastic DIY Christmas ornament, and I snapped the tab off with pliers. I used these wide mouth jars, which exactly fit the jar lids, and I used these figurines, and these - the ticket here is that they have to be the right size to fit under the dome. You'll see what I mean in the video below. I used my cordless hot glue gun to put the entire thing together, and finished it with opal glitter glue.

Last year, I used these beautiful blue jars - these are my faves.

You can purchase just the lid inserts, and so I made a few free-standing globes that don't go on a jar lid. Note in the video the difference - these cannot be added to a ring lid and you'll see why. These are desk or home decor.

Neighbor Gifts - Mason Jar Snow Globes

I'm not sure I'll get Christmas cards out this year. It's been a very rough year in a lot of ways, and I've met all my obligations to people and for work, but I think I might let that one go with no guilt.

However, I did find a quick gift idea for my neighbors, who are all amazing and a pretty tightly knit community. They've also had a hard year. We are all ready to get started on 2019.

I always make them some sort of handmade gift - one year it was a large paper snowflake tree ornament, one year it was candied jalapenos, one year it was jars of these dreamy mints that Lori Craig found the recipe for. Most of them are bakers, and always make yummy treats for the street.

This year I decided to make little snowglobe mason jars with candy in them. I figure the candy would last longer if they were overwhelmed with holiday sweets, so here's what they look like finished.

Each one has a little tree or a figurine.

They're shiny, so it was hard to avoid the glare from my skylight.

Here's how you do them. You need any size of wide-mouth Ball jar. This is the size I used.

Take the lid apart - you will be using the flat insert for the lid to build your scene. But first, take one of these domes and glue it to the lid ring with hot glue. I highly recommend this cordless glue gun for this, because you have to work very fast, and a cord would make it impossible. When I was grabbing the link for this glue gun I love I was shocked to see they are $17 - I think I paid like $60 when they first came out. That's what I get for being an early adopter I guess.

So run a quick bead of hot glue down around the open ring lid and pop the dome on there. Don't worry if it's messy, you'll be covering that up.

Next take the insert for the lid and choose a figurine. Test the height of the figurine by putting it on the insert and putting the insert all the way into the ring/dome combo before committing. I used these figurines, these snowmenthese trees and these trees. I did have to trim some of the trees down, which I did with my die snips. These snips are less than $5 and I use them to cut apart my dies and snip wire, etc.

Then, separate a jumbo cotton ball and put it all around the figurine with hot glue.

The cool thing about this project is hot glue sets so fast, so these are super quick. The longest part is the next step.

Fill the jar with your treats and screw on the lid. (This is where you'll be glad you checked the height of your figurine.)

Take this glitter glue and run it along the outside of the dome - this will hide any lumpy hot glue. I like this glitter glue because it has a cap attached that you don't have to screw on. This part can be a bit messy and I didn't want to mess with taking a cap on and off every time. Also, the size of the bottle reduces hand fatigue - this is a lot of squeezing.

Let that dry and you're all set! Mine took about half an hour.

Give me Coffee or Lock Me Up!

I have so much fun stuff for you today!

First - the other day I was painting this image, and I had to google what a baby goose looked like. Turns out they are olive green for the most part, with a bit of yellow. Also, they don't have that little stripe across their eye fur (I'm certain that's what scientists call it) like baby ducks do.

I needed to get it right because this storybook SWEET new stamp set demanded it. Doesn't it just kill you? I stamped the image in Fadeout ink and then watercolored with Daniel Smith watercolor. I tried to make it look like they were at the edge of a lake, and I used a teeny brush to make him look fuzzy. The sentiment is from this GORGEOUS beach themed set, and I stamped that in Nocturne. It's matted with Wild Dandelion and mounted onto a Desert Storm card base. I cut the sentiment in half to wrap it for a landscape card. Don't freak out - stamp surgery is my specialty!

NEXT - there are two FANTASTIC single stamp sets for birthday sentiments in this release. I love single stamps like this - they are affordable, and for birthdays - these especially make quick cards simple and easy. There's this one, and the one I used today. I just used the Life Changing Blender Brushes to brush Passionate Pink, Tangerine Twist, Wild Dandelion, Key Lime and Blue Raspberry ink through this stencil. I doubt that took even a minute.

Then, I stamped this sentiment in Nocturne and added my favorite sequins. The card base is Key Lime. That is a super fun and quick birthday card where the sentiment is the star.

Now I saved the best card for last. I cracked myself up with this card - the sentiment is SO hilarious and gave me an idea to turn this girl into a mugshot. I stamped her in Nocturne, and then drew stripes across her shirt for that jailbird look. I used the same Micron Pen and a ruler to draw stripes behind her and added the heights. I added accents to her and some sparkles behind her with my fave white gel pen, because come on - a girl who loves coffee that much leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes! Even to jail! Look at her death grip on her cup haha.

Then, for today's second to last (of ten) Falliday Fest tutorials at Splitcoast, I updated Cindy Lawrence's adorable Card Pouch Tutorial to an A2 sized pouch. It has two pockets inside to hold cards on one side, and envelopes on the other. I temporarily adhered the top edges together with Hermafix repositionable, and used this rectangle die to cut a handle out of both pieces at once.

I used Shaded Lilac Distress Oxides to stamp this gorgeous distressed stripe background onto both the main pieces of the pouch and also the pockets on the inside with my MISTI.

The STUNNING large floral is from this set. I stamped that in Nocturne and then used Shaded Lilac and Twisted Citron regular distress reinkers to do a quick watercolor.

I added some glitter paper to the bottom of each side of the pouch to make it a bit sturdier. My updated dimensions are below.

So if you look at her original tutorial linked above, the cards in her project are 4.25 x 4.25. Mine are A2, so here are my modifications.

Here's what it looks like on the inside. And there's a handle on top - I just cropped the photo so it wasn't three feet long. Don't those Oxides look beautiful on Desert Storm? The envelopes are this color.
