Mail Call!

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

If anything communicates the joy of getting mail, it's tomorrow's Hero Arts Kit! I played with the premium kit, and this die is actually a tri-fold from the premium kit, but I loved this silhouette - it looks like the golden retriever I had when I was a kid. So sweet.

You'll see some VERY fun 70s style images, speaking of my childhood. Just wait! You can see more inspiration here, and I'll see you tomorrow!

VIDEO: No Line Watercolor Otters & A Quick Question

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

I'm here today with some otterly ADORABLE no-line watercolor and some fun otter facts. I used this otter stamp set, Daniel Smith Watercolor, grey Versafine Clair and my trusty Post-It tape

I found some fun otter facts that I included in the video. Otters are really amazing creatures.

Aren't they cute?

I'm making fajitas this weekend with a pretty simple spice mix and OJ for the marinade. Lots of chicken and beef so there's some to freeze, but also just for ingredients for the week.

If you are a subscriber to the NYTCooking site, check out their sheet pan kimchi fried rice - it's AMAZING. I can't share it because it's a paid service, but if you're not a paid subscriber, the Food Network has a sheet pan fried rice recipe as well.

It's rained a lot here, so my arugula is going crazy - I'm going to make the copycat Chipotle vinaigrette and dig into that this weekend.

Speaking of Chipotle - if you haven't had their new Al Pastor, it's absolutely the best thing on their menu - it's great. Get you some!

PS did you see this new storage

Have a great weekend. Loveyameanitbye.

Bright Lilies + A Fabulous Egg Cooker

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

I realized when I was coloring these gorgeous lilies - that lilies are the one flower I've never tried to grow! I love bulbs - I have amaryllis, iris, paperwhites, Lucifer crocosmia, oxalis - but never a lily or a daffodil. I'll have to get right on that!

These beautiful lilies were drawn by my friend Kelly! Since she's the coloring expert, you know they're drawn perfectly for big, bold color, so that's what I went for with my OLO Markers. I have the matching die, but at the very last second, I decided for an abstract sky instead, but I still left lots of white.

I added some white paint pen dots - I feel like those make the black lily dots stand out even more. Such a pretty image.

There's this grouping, and then there are individual stems in the set as well. There's also this OTTERLY ADORABLE set I'll be using on my live today.

What did you get up to this weekend?

You won't believe this, but we had these limestone rocks bordering our flowerbed when we moved in, that over the years just sank under the grass, mulch in the beds etc. So this weekend we dug them all up, they were like a foot deep - poured sand in the trench and re-seated them. It looks so nice. The bad news is that was just one. We have one more to go. It's hard work - they are heavy and awkward.

In cooking news, my friend Latisha showed me this gorgeous blue pottery on Etsy and I became intrigued by the egg cooker. So I bought that and one of her beautiful soup mugs

The egg cooker is a MIRACLE. It cooks fluffy, round eggs in the microwave in about a minute.

I forgot to put butter in it and it still slid right out! I'm SUPER picky about the texture of my eggs, and this is absolutely perfect. Because of the shape of it, it also comes out perfectly round for breakfast sandwiches. I love it so much, and I say that as a person who never uses the microwave. But I read her reviews and had to try it, and man am I glad I did. Here are some of the colors - I got turquoise to match my soup mugs and they are just stunning. Five stars to this lady and her invention!

Ephemerally Speaking & New Coupon Code

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

If you've been around long enough to see trends come back around - yes, I'm old - like the ephemera trend. In the late 1900s, when we were doing a LOT of ATC swaps, ephemera was heavily used, but in those days, was harder to find. There were some Ebay sellers back then, but it was rarer and more expensive, so I'm happy to see it making a comeback in a more affordable way.

I have some ephemera-only cards for you today. Well not ONLY because I am using this gorgeous paper as well. But I love these little packages of die cut ephemera with foil, etc. that I used with the paper. All the colors coordinate! I picked a sentiment that had little matching teal flowers in it and used the essentials dies to cut circles from another paper in that same stack.

Like this post? Never miss a post by following me!

The plummy paper is so pretty with the watercolor-looking springy green. The little birdie is from this package of ephemera. I punched out some gold glitter paper circles to match the foiled parts.

I have a new coupon code for you today at one of my FAVORITE crafty sites - Acorns & Twigs! If you follow me on Instagram, you know I've been making potholders for a few years while I watch TV in the evenings - it's so fun & relaxing and takes me back to a beloved childhood craft.

I re-started this after we found a loom in a relative's house who had passed away from Covid in 2020. I had forgotten about this craft completely and was overjoyed to rediscover it. It's simple, repetitive, and patterns have come a LONG way.

But I wasn't the only one who had the idea for this pandemic craft - and I quickly found that the quality of loops available was mostly terrible. Until I found Acorn & Twigs. A small, family owned business that has really high quality crafty goodies - and the color range on the loops was amazing

So I bought a TON of them and started working on my own patterns. I found that the PRO loom gives you more design freedom, but I enjoy both.

I joined their Keep on Looping club too (temporarily sold out) and love it.

Anyway - sweet family, sweet crafty supplies.

And they gave me a coupon code you can use for 10% off on their site - UNDERSTANDBLUE. Enjoy! Loveyameanitbye.

VIDEO - A Buy Nothing Watercolor Card

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

I've talked a lot about my local Buy Nothing group, which is a phenomenal group. This weekend, I was going through some things to give away, and I thought I'd share a card made with something I got from a neighbor on the group.

Someone was giving away music books recently and you know I cannot resist an old music book or old books, so I put my name in the hat.

One of the books was wonderful in a LOT of ways as you will see in the video.

I used a page as a backdrop of song for these beautiful bird dies. I cut them from watercolor paper and painted them with Daniel Smith watercolor. I used these shaker dies to cut two circles in the center - I modified one as you'll see in the video - how you treat old paper makes a huge difference so I'll give you some tips. The sentiment and die are from this set.

Here's the video - please note, the first part is sped up watercolor with music,
and the second part is where I start talking:

I made the coconut cake again - SO good. Other than that, I really didn't cook this weekend. I had made tortillas and refried beans last week so I just had a combo of tacos and nachos all weekend during the Hero Arts Spring Stamp-Along. PS - the Credo spicy queso is a phenomenal dairy free queso.

I thought this event was PHENOMENAL - I learned so very much, and I agree with what one of the participants said - how MUCH info you got for the price was just staggering. If you have regrets, you can still purchase this event here

Hope you have a great week ahead!

VIDEO: Faux Chine Collé Technique - Splitcoaststampers MIX-Ability Challenge

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

I was so excited to see last week's Mix-Ability challenge at Splitcoast, for two reasons: 1) It was based on a classical art technique, which is a fave of mine - adapting art techniques to stamping and 2) I had to figure out how to adapt it my own way. Janelle came up with the idea and I deliberately didn't look at anyone's process so I could see if I could figure it out my own way. So after I publish this, I'm going to go watch everyone else's!

Chine collé is a combo printing and collage technique that gives you both spot color AND texture from a thing layer of tissue. So when you are done with the card, it's a fun card to pet and feel all the texture on - much more than just color, which you could just get with a marker.

I chose to "paint" with tissue paper in a process you'll see in the video. Here are the things I used:

I've been gardening like a FOOL this week, so this stamp was the perfect one to use to reflect what's going on in my yard (and in my joints LOL). After I get my taxes done, I'm going to sketch out what I planted where, because those little plant markers never stick around for long. This will help me learn what will survive our hot summers, drought or floods etc. I ONLY use perennial natives that can survive extremes, so I try different things in different years. I'll post a pic of my sketch when I'm done.

Anyway - here's the video - enjoy! If you play along with the challenge, upload your cards to Splitcoast or tag us on Instagram, and use keyword MIX532.

25 New C9 Colors and a Marker Cross Reference Chart!

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

Exciting day - NEW INK!!! New ink, new cardstock, new swatch stamps & dies, matching enamel dots - new everything!! Concord & 9th has added 25 new ink colors and they are so prettttyyyyyyy!!

I really love the new swatch book dies though - those have been really fun to play with, and I figured while I was making ink swatches, I should go ahead and do the marker matches while I was at it! So I matched these new colors to both Copic and OLO Markers in a handy reference chart, which you can purchase here. This has my notes, marker numbers and you can print it in color to keep with your marker charts like I do. It's a single page.

The cardstock and inks are spot on matches for each other too.  I used the new layering stencil with the combo you see on the swatch and then added two neutrals because I fell in love with this combo.

I LOVE that they included ink names on their swatch stamp set! GENIUS. Think of all the organizational things you can do with that! ALL THE LABELS.
And they are in a clean, easy to read font.

Watch my Instagram for more fun projects with this collection - it's so freaking fun to have new colors.

Dawn's Seahorse Kisses

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

What is it about seahorses that is so ridiculously adorable? They seem so gentle and strange. And there are so many different kinds! I LOVED the seahorses at the Monterey Aquarium and spent most of my time between them and the sea lemons.

I was so excited when Yana told me that my beloved Dawn Woleslagle had designed this seahorse/sea themed collection. There are few things I love more than both Dawn and seahorses.

I used alcohol ink and my gel plate to create the background. Then I used Juniper and Grape Jam inks (which you'll see in an hour) for two of the seaweed images on that print, and gold ink for the third. The Seahorse is colored with OLO Markers. This combo of aqua and violet will never get old for me.

Then I used the foiling dies in this collection with watercolor paper to create the debossed sentiment and jellyfish. My brayer still had alcohol ink on it from the print, so I spritzed it with alcohol and then rolled it over the debossed paper to make the images pop. I love the distressed look so much.

I don't eat sea creatures - I just admire them!

What is your favorite sea creature? Jellies are beautiful too, but I've been stung by enough of them on Texas beaches that I'm wary!

Seahorses and sea lemons are still my faves.

VIDEO: Snarky Collage Style Card

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

I have a super easy and fun collage style card for you today! And a peanut noodle update, but first things first!

I fell in love with this prickly pear image when I saw it - I knew it was going to be great for no-line watercolor, and I was right! The shape is so fun to paint as you'll see in the video - I did it with the gray split from my Daniel Smith split group. The background and flowers are pink, yellow and orange neon watercolor with a fun trick you'll see in the video. The little mark making stamps are from this stamp collection. I used a date stamp like I do on my art journal pages.

The snarky sentiment strip is from this package. There are lots more snarky and non snarky strips, foiled ones etc. in my bujo link in the coupon section below. I find myself reaching for these more these days. Old age? HUSH. :)

Here's the video:

So there was a place in town called Bento Picnic that I adored. True story - I've never been there. As you know I haven't grocery shopped in many, many years, and they were more of a store and catering operation than a restaurant - or were when I started shopping there via Farmhouse. They made these incredible prepared meals, which is not something I normally even buy, so that tells you how good they are, and when I first figured out I had a dairy allergy, their vegan meals were SOOOOO delicious.

My favorite was this box that had cold sesame soba noodles, tamagoyaki (Japanese sweet rolled omelette - it sounds weird if you've never had a sweet egg dish but it's SO good), and crispy pickled veggies - radishes, cabbage etc. The combo is amazing and the whole thing is cold, which is always welcome here in Texas.

Anyway this week I tried something similar. I made my favorite cold peanut noodles, pickled some cabbage and tried making my own tamagoyaki. LET ME TELL YOU the tamagoyaki is HARD. I've watched a ton of videos on it and oof - I need practice. But I can tell you that the recipe I tried was PERFECT on taste. I just need technique practice on it. I will tell you literally no recipe gets the stove temperature right - you really just have to know your stove. Don't take "medium" to mean literally anything. 😂

We got a NICE rain today so I'm hoping my new plants have a great headstart on life now.

Hope you have a fun weekend lined up. My plan is taxes. 😑 BUT - if I get done, I'm free for my teaching duties at the Spring Stamp-along the following weekend!

Masking Layered Florals + Armadillo Defense Update!

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

You guys! I'm so excited about my ADS - Armadillo Defense System! It's day three, and this morning when I was watering, what did I see? An armadillo hole RIGHT up next to the ADS, but all the area covered by the ADS and my baby plants were SAFE. And I'm talking about the ones I pinned straight into the ground. The enclosures were safe too - but those are a LOT more work putting together than just pinning the grids into the ground, so I'm going to give it five stars. And I LOVE that it's really invisible - you can't even see it. I also bought a modular compost system but it's not here yet.

Today at lunch we did the backbreaking work of moving all the potted plants back to their places - they were on the porch to survive stupid Mara (the ice storm). I took the opportunity to repot most of them - for some reason thyme and mint just eat dirt like crazy.

My friend Dana sent me a TikTok from a landscaper with a great trick last week so I did it and I'm really happy with it. She said to fill up your pots with water bottles etc. with the caps on to take up space in the pots - that you don't need to fill all that space with dirt. She also said to buy the 3.6 cubic foot squares of this growing medium - it's inexpensive and light. She adds fertilizer to that - but fertilizer kills herbs, so I just mixed the original potting soil back in with the medium to provide nutrients. AND I used scraps of the ADS that I had cut down to fit some of my potted plants over the drain holes, added these clay balls, then the water bottles, growing medium, potting soil and my plants I was repotting. They're always so happy after repotting. I shook all the compacted soil off their roots before repotting them.

So needless to say, my back is tired, but it's supposed to rain tomorrow and we needed to get it all done before that. I really hope it does rain - the difference between rainwater and hose water on plants is remarkable if you've never noticed.

SO anyway, I have a floral card for you today with my favorite thing - masking! There are some fun little layering flowers in the basket set that I wanted to make a little rainbow border with and I am tickled by how easy it is! For one thing - it's three flowers repeated, so you only have to cut three masks - and not the whole flower, just the right hand side. So it's very quick masking. I stamped the outline first and then the solid stamp. On the left, right and center flowers, I shifted the solid stamp down just a bit so I got a white highlight - I love that look! The other ones I lined up exactly - so you can do either.

Ended up being a really fun clean & simple card. The sentiments are modular - so those are two separate stamps.

Mixed Media Garden Themed Kit Cards & Armadillo Defense System + Giveaway

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

Happy Monday from Lydia's little completely unpaid landscaping business, where I've been toiling away! I worked HORD this weekend (Grizzly True Crime Fans joke) planting some new plants and installing an ADS - armadillo defense system. My armadillo is ruthless in my flower beds, and I wanted to save my new plants, so I bought these wire grates/pin system, and while I was putting together little cages around the new stuff, I had a better idea that I tried out. I cut some of them for pots with my Fiskars clippers, and pinned them straight onto the dirt around my plants both in pots and in the groundwith the pins. You can't see them at all, but armadillos and squirrels hate wire, and so far it's working great! I'll give it a week and then convert all the cages to just flat wire on the ground. I really only want them to not dig right near the plants - I don't mind if they dig elsewhere in the beds for food. I'm pretty stoked about it.

I also did a lot of weeding and removing landscape fabric - I hate that stuff sooo much and I'm so mad about it. It's backbreaking work to remove! I got shrimp plants, some creeping Jenny, a few larger oxalis to supplement the ones that have been in my yard for years - I'm trying to entice them to take over an entire flowerbed. 100% native plants is the way to go - especially seeing what survived after the freezes this year - like my spiderwort, which I also got more of.

Anyway - we should get gardening recovery PTO for real. I'm SORE!

So I have some springy garden themed cards for you today! I love this new kit - it has a fun mixed media feel that is going to be GREAT for art journaling!

The first card is so bright and happy and springy with just holy trinity ink blending with Ultra Pink, Dandelion and Summer Sky. I stamped the texture image from the kit texture set and then cut the leaves and sentiments and added those in crisp white.

And here's the premium kit:

I LOVE all the mark making stamps and this fun stencil in the premium kit this month - they have a Keith Haring feel. They are also very art journaly. But look at the adorable and bright enamel stickers - such fun shapes!! Those are also from the premium kit.

This is all the classic kit.

VIDEO: Eat AND PLANT Your Greens!

*Compensated affiliate links used where possible at zero cost to you. No posts are ever sponsored or paid.*

I spent yesterday morning while my computer updated at my favorite nursery. I was very good and didn't spend much but I needed some new plants to help my heart recover from our terrible ice storm and the loss of most of our trees.

It was just what the doctor ordered! I got there like two minutes before they opened the gate, and zipped in and out in 20 minutes. This place is great because the whole thing is outside including paying for your plants, so no need for plague gear - you're basically alone outside. I love it. I got some beautiful plants - some new to me. But I also bought more of the plants that have survived the insane winters we have had since 2021: Blue plumbago, spiderwort, burgundy shamrock, shrimp plants. I'm so excited because both my ginger and my selloum have sprung back to life this week. The white irises my sister gave me bloomed this month too. I looked back at some of my memories on Facebook and found that some of my plants didn't come back until April 30th after Uri. So I'm not pulling out any brown sticks just yet. Oh - my pineapple sage also came back and seems to be thriving.

Anyway that's what inspired today's post, which is all about GREEN. I used these stunning veggie dies for an all green celebration of spring for today's video, which features both granulating and non-granulating green pigments from the Daniel Smith line, which you'll see in the video. The dies are beautifully detailed, and the watercolor highlights those details so well. Plus as a person who is happiest eating mostly veggies, they just make me happy. I finished the card with this sweet black and white paper, a splashy sentiment and these rhinestones. I cut the paper into two pieces to give them a plain white background stripe. I'm not even a little bit sorry if this makes you want a salad. Not one bit. But I might be back with a new vegan ranch recipe Monday so stay tuned.

BUT, more importantly - this card and video is for this weekend's Virtual Stamp Night called "What's on the Menu?" Splitcoast has been doing free online events for 20 years next year - long before social media and long before it was cool, so I hope you join us! I'm hosting a challenge today, and this post is a clue!
