Who needs coffee? I DO. I probably drank more caffeine this weekend than in the whole week prior. It is a very busy month.
So today I have for you - COFFEE! This month's Hero Arts kit is ALL about coffee, coffee shops, tea, tea parties - basically everything that's good and right in the world.
When I saw the main kit image, I was psyched, not just about the coffee and tea, but that the cups were large enough to watercolor, so watercolor I did!
At Junkiefest in Minneapolis in my watercolor class, I had people asking me to do a full-length watercolor video (I usually edit parts out for the sake of time), so - wish granted! I actually have TWO videos for you today - the watercolor video for this first card, and then a quick overview of the permanent markers I use on my DIY Hero Arts blog calendar.
But first, coffee.
I stamped cups 2 & 4 in Fadeout ink on my favorite watercolor paper. Then I stamped them in Wet Cement onto masking paper, and cut them out and masked them. Then I set the remaining three cups up on my MISTI and stamped them all at once.
I watercolored them with Daniel Smith watercolor with an Escoda Versatil brush. The sentiment is from the kit as well. This took me about an hour to paint, so I sped up the video but didn't cut a single thing out :).
Don't tell me that you can't smell coffee and tea right now in your brain - you know you can. Speaking of that - I had a Starbucks employee hand me my Earl Grey the other day and say "Oh - I finally figured out what that smell is in that tea - it's LAVENDER." No, honey, it's not. Anyway.
The kit comes with matching dies, of course, and I LOVE the cafe die!! Their scenic dies are awesome. That's a pretty amazing die to come in a kit for that price, just sayin'. The remaining dies cut out the cups, the steam and the foam. Here's the whole kit. That fun lacquer I'll be using on a card below.
Then, I had an idea for the lacquer from the kit. I wanted to make all the teapots and bibs and bobs from the Tea Time and Spill the Tea add-ons shiny like porcelain, so I stamped them in Indigo - setting them all up on the MISTI so I just had to stamp one time, and then lacquered them. After that was dry, I painted the whole piece with Dandelion Liquid Watercolor. Reflection is so hard to capture, but you can see it here and there - like look at the bottom cookie. The sentiment in that delicate font is from Tea Time.
This card is a bit more complicated than it looks. The teacup is stamped in Indigo. Then I stamped it again on masking paper, cutting out only the cup so it was a negative space mask. Then I inked up the Floral Doily Bold Prints in Indigo and stamped on top of the mask, so that I just got the pattern on the cup, making it look like china. Then I watercolored the doily image to fill some parts of the pattern in with Deep Ocean Liquid Watercolor.
I stamped, die cut and watercolored the bear image, with the amazing new Cocoa Liquid watercolor. I also used Cocoa on the inside of the cup before gluing the bear down. The top and bottom rims of the cup are colored with a chrome pen - they are reflective and shiny in real life. The sentiment is from Foam Animals. I kept the rest simple.
How's that for amazing? The Mocha Maiden stamp is exactly how I feel AFTER coffee. Thankfully there's no stamp in this release for how I look or feel BEFORE.
We are celebrating the new kit with a hop of course. Next stop for you is Michelle. Leave me a comment with your feelings on coffee or tea for your chance to win this awesome kit, or a refund if you purchase it or are a subscriber.
These are absolutely fabulous, Lydia! You're amazing. And I almost spewed my coffee when I read about the naive little barista that thought earl grey smelled like lavender! Haha!
I'm going to have to stop looking at your blog--or we will have to stop traveling. I cannot buy everything I want that you show and still afford to travel. Your cards are fantastic!!!
WOW you have been busy. Just love them all. Love the little cats in the cups - Hero Arts definitely think outside the box and you great crafters use these products so well. Thank you just love it all
Lydia, I love, love, love your watercolor painted coffee card! Gorgeous! And yes, I love the foam critters for the drinks! Would love to own this stamp and die set!
I love coffee (unadulterated), I love tea (also unadulterated) - the only time I put anything in either is when it is bad coffee or tea. Sugar is strictly forbidden in both - honey is acceptable but only in tea when you have the flu. While I know that caffeine is an addiction, considering the only thing it gives me is a minor headache when I quit, I figure it is one of the best bad habits I could have! I am not sure that real time is so bad every so often. It reminds us amateurs that is REALLY does take a long time to complete a painting. Thanks for sharing your full video!
I love both coffee and tea! Coffee gets me started in the morning and a nice cup of tea in the afternoon keeps me going till bedtime. Love your cards and the theme of this months kit! Thanks for sharing your ideas!
The first card is just amazing - I want all of those cups in my collection (please!). lol Just gorgeous. The kitty in the cup is hysterical and adorable! I can't wait to get this kit - it's ordered - yay!

Thank you for the great cards !!!!!! And the videos were great....You are awesome my dear.....this new kit is super cute....thank you so much for sharing.
Loved each card so much. But the coffee/cafe card took me back to my childhood when my Dad would always leave a few sips of his coffee (w/cream and sugar!) on the table before he left for work - knowing I would drink the last bit before he left the driveway :):) I sat mesmerized watching you paint and listening to your poetic voice. You're so charming, Lydia! I've learned so much from you and have gained the confidence I need in taking a leap of faith in creating from my own style now.
Wow so many really cool looking cards! The water coloring for the first card is very pretty! your colors and coloring is just so fantastic to look at!!

Oh yeah, and by the way...how I feel about coffee - ode to coffee. Coffee, Coffee in my cup. I get my mug and fill 'er up. There is no end to the bliss. Of ev'ry morning's fresh brewed sip. (LOL - ok so I'll go back to being an accountant now...I'll be here all week!)
Whoa, amazing work. YouTube recommended your cups video. I adore the colours on that card. I came straight over to your blog, what a treat! It's 11.30pm so no coffee for me until the morning. It's almost a ritual enjoying the aroma before my first sip. Americano is my 'go to' at home, but I now have a Matcha tea to kick start me at work. Not so much time for my ritual savour there!
Your card is awesome and you made me think twice about watercoloring. Like I just might be able to create something beautiful. Thank you for that. I'm like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when it comes to my coffee. Like my cup reads no talkee before coffee.
What nice and interesting cards! Yours always are. That cafe with the red & white awning really catches my eye. My sleepy time tea is just done seeping and I have it every night.
