VIDEO: Spooky Mixed Media Mini-Slimline Card + Pumpkin Recipe

I have a weird line in my mind regarding Halloween and scary things.

So I LOVE scary things - I love haunted houses (except for the one that broke my sister's leg - more on that later), I love scary movies (except for ones across my imaginary line), I love roller coasters, and if I were a billionaire, I would not be shooting myself into space on a dubious looking rocket, but I WOULD start every morning on the Tower of Terror ride - I'd have one built in my yard, and I'd grab coffee and hop on first thing. Your day could not have a better start. I especially love mysteries and of course true crime, on this side of the line.

But the line can be crossed for sure. I don't enjoy gore or violent movies/shows. I prefer my thrillers to be psychological or supernatural. I had to stop watching The Walking Dead because Terminus was just too gross. I've never seen the Exorcist, because it just really doesn't look like my kind of thing. I did see a clip the other day regarding Linda Blair - they were doing her makeup and it was TERRIFYING. Also in one scene apparently she fractured a vertebrae and her screams were REAL! No thank you to all that.

Give me a good suspenseful psychological thriller any day. Or Dateline. Or a podcast.

But oh how I do love Halloween on a card! I lost it when I saw this beautiful Halloween collection and I love that it includes some non-Halloween images too. I had some birthday money to spend, so I just hit the buy it all button and I've been having so much fun with it.

So I have a video for you of the process below. I stamped and cut out the skull and then worked on the background, which uses Oxides, Paper Glaze, Root Beer Ink, Paper Glitz and gold ink. It's on one of my pre-cut and scored mini slim cards when it's done, but the background is watercolor paper. I found something interesting out about the watercolor paper - whenever you use any sort of embossing past, Paper Glaze etc. on cardstock, you will see a little warping until it's dry. But not on cold press watercolor paper! Nice bonus I wasn't expecting.

So here is the video!

A few years ago on a Santa Fe pilgrimage, we had dinner in a gallery made by this PHENOMENAL female chef and it was one of my fave meals I've ever had. It was a pumpkin ravioli in a brown butter sage sauce. SO delicious. So I came home and scoured the internet until I found a recipe that looked just like hers tasted, and I finally found one.

To make it dairy free, I sub Miyoko's butter, which makes a FINE brown butter that I also use in my favorite cookie recipe. The only thing that eludes me post-dairy is parmesan. There is no good vegan parmesan that I've found yet. I LOATHE nutritional yeast - it tastes like mold to me - so I want to try this recipe soon. What parmesan adds is a nutty salty taste, and this looks like it might work.

So anyway - I hope your week is shaping up great. It's still cool and beautiful here, so I'm enjoying that.

Loveyameanitbye.

  1. This is spectacularly spooky! I really like how you used the paper glaze in random places. I usually think of covering an entire card front but the idea of a few random places appeals to me more! I am tucking this idea away!
