Rent a room, pick a date and just do it.
You'll store up a year's worth of laughs and hugs in a weekend, and go away with more ideas than you can count.
Don't wait for someone else to do it - YOU do it and gather your tribe. It will turn into a tradition before you know it, and it will greatly improve your quality of life, I promise.
Now what you can't ask me is if I actually got any crafting done, because I can assure you by the end of the weekend, the answer will still be no.
But I did get some done before I left, and I have to say, the ENTIRE time I was making this card, as you'll hear on the video I made, I cracked myself up.
This is a new set from Honey Bee stamps - and the owner - Melissa Hewitt - is here with me this weekend, as well as her partner in crime - Lisa Cisneros. I love these two ladies to the moon and back. And of course, I adore everything Melissa makes.
So of course, I had to take her new bunny from Heaven Sent and apply my twisted mind to it for today's card. I'm still laughing. The whole thing was inspired by the sentiment set - Small Gang.
I stamped the images first in fadeout ink so the lines would disappear, and then used Daniel Smith Watercolor - just two colors, one from the mixing reference guide listed below - to paint the little bunnies into a gang - a CHAIN GANG! Ha!!
|
Now for the real stamp image, he's wearing pajamas, and not prison stripes. But come on - this is funnier. Those gorgeous black and grey Galaxy sequins are from Honey Bee too. The matching dies for this stamp set are here.
Then I started behaving myself with another new stamp set. Well - I SORT OF behaved myself. The gorgeous flower in this Spring Blossoms set looks to me like my dogwood tree, but I decided to paint it in the color scheme of a pansy, because I wanted to make a point about complementary colors.
You know how people are constantly giving you rules about art and color theory... well my rule is - ignore all the rules.
People brainwashed me for so long about "mud" that I nearly got to the point of no return and believed it.
I avoided using them together like the plague, because I was terrified of the imaginary mud.
And then I had enough. I started shading my green leaves with purple and red, and suddenly my green leaves came to life like nobody's business. For a great example of this - click here.
So this card is to prove to you that defying the myth of mud can be a beautiful thing.
Behold, the pansy colored dogwood, where purple and yellow do NOT, in fact, make mud, but instead just make a pretty card. See the purple in the green leaves? And the orange? And where the purple and yellow blend? You don't need rules. You need rebellion in your heart, along with some good watercolor paper and some pretty images. The big smile sentiment makes me happy. I stamped the image in the magical fadeout ink before I painted it. All watercolor is Daniel Smith. (If you are into watercolor, I have a private Facebook group where I split tubes of Daniel Smith watercolor so that people can buy them for a LOT less than the tube price. Click here for info on that.)

The card base is a white linen cardstock that I get cut and scored and corner rounded from this website. I love the convenience of that. Just stick it in your Scor-Buddy, crease and you're done!
So these cards are for a blog hop today celebrating Honey Bee stamps birthday and their spring release! If you leave a comment on each blog in the hop, you will have a chance to win the Honey Bee giveaway - two winners will receive a $50 gift certificate. ReplyDeleteI LOVE how you colored the spring blossoms... especially the leaves.. I need to come to your retreat! Someday!
ReplyDeleteYou're a little twisted, but I like that in a person. :D These little bunnies are my favorite Honey Bee product, because Blah Bunny is me. I'm so happy to see more, even if you've turned them slightly evil!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I wanted to thank you for your help with choosing Versafine Onyx Black vs. Clair Nocturne. I have a Nocturne pad on the way, and I can't wait to get watercoloring with it. Next on the list: Inkon3's fadeout ink! You always give such great tips and direction in your videos, and it makes me bolder in my watercoloring, even though I often get scared by all the shoulds and shouldn'ts.
ThaT monochromatic card is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYour card is fabulous and I LOVE your sense of humor! I think it’s one of the main reasons I follow you. Well that and your incredible talent. And your sweet, calming voice. Thanks Lydia!

ReplyDeleteYour chain gang bunnies are adorable! I don't think that is twisted at all, but I can have a warped sense of humour too.
ReplyDeleteYour bunny is perfection, I would totally pick him up on the roadside too! Tough hopefully he'll only murder carrots (after all those years of ruining he's health they might even deserve it), I mean, Monty Python did teach us not to trust the cuteness of bunnies ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration and the laugh ❤

ReplyDeleteSuper cute bunny card!
ReplyDeleteThe prison bunny is adorable.
ReplyDeleteThank you creative and crazy fun lady for showing us a way to use that sweet bunny for a grown up! I'm giggling too. Your flower card is lovely, but the bunny has my heart (and wicked sense of humor)!

ReplyDeleteI just love this bunny stamp! His jammies are too cute and the little bunny he is holding is Adorable!
ReplyDeleteWhat? No mud? But everyone for years told me about "the mud!" Maybe it's the quality of your paint that resists mud colors. I will take a deep breath and step off into the non-mud and let you know what happens. Your bunnies cracked me up. PS Tell Melissa thank you for the free little mini bee and sequins she put into my latest order last week :) Enjoy your gang friends!!!
ReplyDeleteLove, love the chain gang card, too funny!

ReplyDeleteLydia, your cards are fantastic. (I def. need to get some Arches paper.) L♥VE the 'ggang' they are simply precious!
ReplyDeleteOK, so now I am def. throwing out the "rules" on mud! You flowers look amazing!
I, for one, love your sense of humour and your card😄 Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLOVE both of your cards!! I have watched you on YT before but just discovered your cards again and they are so amazing! And you are so right about meeting your gang! And about not sticking to "craft rules"!! I needed to hear this again!! Love how you colored the violet and yellow flower and didn't let the colors mix! But for me, especially when coloring flowers there is also nothing wrong with complementary colors adding a little brown to the coloring. :) Great post, TFS!
ReplyDeleteLove your sense of humor!! Thank you for sharing your technique!!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! Card #1 is the perfect combination of precious and funny. Card #2 shows you are a color theory rebel! Love it!!! Mother Nature seems to have her own rebellious side as I know I’ve seen these colors in real life without them making “mud”. Thanks for sharing, Lydia!
ReplyDeletelove this sweet bunny, and his little jammies! and the blossoms are super cute :)
ReplyDeleteI love the sentiment on your first card - and the bunny with his stuffed bunny!
