VIDEO: Mazel Tov! Junk Papercrafting Tutorial

It's CATURDAY! I have a busy weekend ahead - it seems like work blurs more into the weekends than it did before. Same for you?

But I do have some holiday tasks on the list too - baking pumpkins for pie for our Zoom Thanksgiving, and working on fruitcakes and a secret Christmas project. Since we can't go out and get a real tree this year, I'm super excited to have gotten and set up something I've always wanted - a super duper retro tinsel tree. It's SO cute and I have to say - unlike a lot of things on Amazon - it's just as cute in real life! I'm waiting for this silver sequin tree skirt to arrive to finish that off.

I'm also hoping over Thanksgiving to get all my Christmas card labels printed so I can see if I have enough cards for this year. Thanksgiving weekend is always when I start making my cards, so I plan to keep that tradition.

I have some fun half holiday half non-holiday cards for you today.

I've been working on a junk journal and having such a grand time doing it, that I thought I'd incorporate those ideas into cards. If you don't know what a junk journal is - it's an art journal literally made out of junk - something that you would normally trash or recycle. So I decided to treat the offensively large load of political junk mail I've gotten this year as free art supplies, and start my own junk journal. If you want the real definition and terms for this art form, this video sums it up - she's one of my fave YouTubers and I love that video, because while she clarifies terminology (super important), she also points out you can do whatever you want. Know the rules so you know how to break them and whatnot.

So anyway - I took a LaCroix box that was destined for the recycle bin and turned it into some cards and junk journal pages. You will see in the video that this started with a failed experiment and turned into something very fun.

First up - this stencil, this embossing paste, and this fabulous Mazel Tov die - it's the first one I've seen and I love this sentiment. I used to have a booth at the Hadassah market at our local Jewish Community Center and would have killed to have this word die back then - there were so few Jewish crafty products on the market then. I pretty much had to DIY the cards I sold at that market.

I used the same die - it has a layering portion - with two glitter papers from this pack, and used this Paper Glaze on top of the other piece of LaCroix Box, treated first with alcohol ink.

I'm MOST excited today though about a product that's named after me! Meet the Snowflake Lydia! EEK!!!!! I'm so touched and thrilled that Nicole did this! It's such a beautiful die.

I used that and the Winter Snowflake Dies and cut them all out of watercolor paper. I glued them to watercolor paper and blended wilted Violet and Peacock Feathers Oxide inks on top. Then I splattered with water, and then brayered white paint onto the die cuts to make them pop.

Last but not least - SHIBA INUS! Warhol style.

I had this strange experience in an airport many years ago. I met a woman with a Shiba Inu, and I instantly bonded with that dog so hard. I love all animals - I had a long conversation with an ant the other day - but I don't BOND with every animal I meet - but sometimes, there is just a click with an animal, and this little dog and I were instantly old friends. I think maybe because he was a lot like a cat - he was very quiet, super smart and sort of intuitive or empathetic or whatever it is that makes felines so magical. It's so weird to remember a stranger's dog all these years later, but that should tell you what a special creature he was. If I'm magically recovered from my dog allergy someday I'll get one of those.

So when I saw this image in the Pet All the Dogs set, I had to make a Warhol dog card. I used Hero Arts Neon Inks for the backgrounds, and Karin neon markers (coupon in footer) for the pups that I cut with their matching dies. I cut the windows with the Slimline Die Cutting system.

  4. Gorgeous!!! And such a brilliant idea, there are so many La Croix boxes in my house just waiting to now be turned into art! LOL Did you start with the blue box, or did the alcohol inks do the job with a different color underneath?
