Heat Embossing With Dies

I had a crazy idea I wanted to try out recently, and thankfully it worked!

That's not always the case, so please note that you should try all your crazy ideas in case one of them works, but nine times out of ten they won't, so be prepared for the nine disasters. That way you won't be disappointed.

I thought I would try a new to me high tack adhesive sheet with dies and see if it worked with embossing powder, and behold, it did! So here are the results, and I have a video below, in case you think I'm lying.

First, I used this die and this double sided adhesive to create a sticky base for two embossing powders -  a verdigris, and this gorgeous copper. Then for the backdrop, I created a matching watercolor background with Amazonite and Mummy Bauxite watercolor.

You'll see in the video that I did a trick I learned from Fred Mullett, one of my favorite teachers everrrrr. It's what he called his "dancing fish" technique to distribute multiple colors of embossing powder evenly across an image.

But let's take a moment to truly appreciate the granulation in the watercolor on this card. Granulation is not something I ever expected I'd love about watercolor, and now I love NOTHING MORE. See how it separates and settles into the texture of the watercolor paper? DREAMY. The two colors I used here are not only stunning together, but they match the two embossing powders so perfectly it's crazy. The sentiment is from this set - one of my fave sympathy sets.
I used the same technique for this gorgeous sunflower die, using the adhesive to stick the embossing powder to the kraft card front, and then using a Polychromos pencil to shadow and accent the image. The sentiment is from this set.

PS I had a terrible incident this week where I let a neighbor borrow my pencil sharpener and they used a sub-standard colored pencil in it. The lead broke and got stuck in there and I spent an hour of my life trying to get it out so I could sharpen this pencil to use on this card. The lesson is - life is too short for cheap pencils. You deserve better. Also, even simple cards like this take a long time if you have to take apart your pencil sharpener. People really don't realize what a card is worth! :)
But wait - not embossing related - HOW AMAZING IS THIS BACKGROUND STAMP??

I immediately saw rainbows and acted accordingly, coloring a tiny rainbow with my mini markers, and painting the rest with Jane's Grey.

The sentiment is this die.

So here's the video of how I did this - I love how the adhesive preserves the details of the texture of the die details, like the center of the sunflower! So fun and easy. Let me know what you think.

  3. I love, love, love these two colors together. It reminds me of New Mexico, we used to go every year to visit my mom. What a brilliant idea using the double sided adhesive! I also love the Scalloped Waves cling stamp and I am happy to see it in 6x6 size. I just don't care for the 5.75x5.75. I know it's only a .25 difference, but it really makes a difference when you're using them on an envelope. Your cards are always stunning!
