I thought this spring was wide open - I wasn't traveling much, I had all these things I was going to get done, and POOF - three months gone already.
So let's talk about Easter, shall we?
I'm not much of a dress person, but I was when I was little. For a long time, my mom made our Easter dresses, and they were always very fancy. Easter was definitely our dressiest holiday, right down to the often white patent leather shoes. We even wore hats and gloves!
However, Texas threw a wrench in every Sunday, and especially Easter.
See, we had these little things called Blue Laws. These laws were intended to keep all of us from the wickedness prowling the aisles of the grocery stores on Sundays.
At about 11 PM on Saturday night, the employees at our Safeway would unfurl heavy plastic curtains over the sinful aisles that were off-limits on Sunday. The toy aisle was a fast track to hell, so it got covered up. So did the beer - that's just the devil in a bottle. Books, magazines - nope - there's only one book you should be reading on Sunday.
But the real crime was pantyhose. Any God-fearing Texas woman would be ruined forever by soiling herself with a shiny silver L'eggs Egg with un-ripped pantyhose in them on a Sunday morning.
Unfortunately, the last thing any God-fearing Texas woman was thinking about on Saturday was blasted pantyhose, so what that meant is that me and my sister often sat in church hearing about the wonders of the resurrection with giant ladder-style runs up the back of our pantyhose, ruining the effect of our lovely, handmade Easter dresses. Thanks a lot, Texas.
Now that no one wears pantyhose anymore, we can actually purchase them on Sundays without the devil bursting out of a L'eggs egg to steal our soul. But we still can't buy beer until noon, which is apparently the end of Satan's workday these days.
I just had to get that off my chest. #pantyhosePTSD
I'm taking part in a big blog hop today with the team at my sweet friend Jen's company - Reverse Confetti - and the My Sweet Petunia team.
She has the CUTEST spring stuff.
I decided to sit down and focus on a simple, classic Easter image - a new chick in an egg carton. I started with my magical fadeout ink, and painted it with just a handful of Daniel Smith watercolors - New Gamboge, Aussie Red-Gold, Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Sienna for my custom Jane's Grey (from this essential book), and a touch of Indanthrone Blue for the shadow on the bottom of the egg carton.
I framed the little scene with Daffodil Delight cardstock, cut with these fantastic frame dies. The sentiment is from the same stamp set.

WOW! Blast from the past, L'EGGs pantyhose! Do they still make those? I cannot remember the last time I wore pantyhose. And that's a good thing, I think.
ReplyDeleteYour card is adorable. Thanks for the opportunity to win such generous prizes.
Happy Easter!
This is just the cutest!! I have to say -- we collected those eggs for all sorts of crafty things, and my mom had a whole drawer full. And---- I sometimes wear pantyhose. Still. But just when I am onstage in a show. :)
ReplyDeleteohmygoodness...pantyhose. Thankgoodness we don't wear those anymore. Your card is darling. Love that Chickie!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO cute! I have that problem where I don't celebrate Easter, but I LOVE the Easter/Spring images out there for stampers!
ReplyDeleteYour tales are certainly reminiscent of the past :) Thanks for the creative goodness!
ReplyDeleteOH, Lydia, you just made my morning with your pantyhose story and your adorable chickie card!! Double love.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I used to love using those L'eggs plastic shells to pretend I had boobies, lol!
I love this little chickie and your watercoloring. All I can say about your Easter dress story, and the blue laws, and the pantyhose - once again, you nailed it all!
ReplyDeleteWonderful story....a great laugh to start the day! Your card is adorable!
ReplyDeleteStill laughing over your snarky post..."noon, apparently the end of Satan's workday these days..." And what a great card. As ever, I am in awe of your watercolor prowess. Thanks for the tip about Ink3.
ReplyDeleteI love the sketch effect on your card.
ReplyDeleteVery cute card! And a fun post, as always.
ReplyDeleteLoved the pantyhose rant and the chickie card is adorable. I read your post to my non-crafty husband - well, just the Blue Law part - so he'd get a laugh, too. And took that opportunity to blame you for the pens I just had to buy.
ReplyDeleteBelle aquarelle pour cette jolie boîte à oeufs, j'aime beaucoup de set parfait pour Pâques !
ReplyDeleteSuch an adorable card! Love the sweet images and your gorgeous coloring! I'm still chuckling over the L'eggs eggs story :)
ReplyDeleteBlue Laws and tarps? L’eggs pantihose! No beer sales now until noon? Really?!? Not that I'd be purchasing beer on a Sunday morning! You are as talented a story teller as you are an artist. How many purchases will I make today? The card is adorable
ReplyDeleteyour post absolutely cracks me up, pardon the L'eggs egg pun. so very true! and I miss those pantyhose eggs because of all the crafty things we could do with them afterward..... sigh....

Cute as can be!
ReplyDeletePerfect recycled-grey egg carton, and the cutest chick!
ReplyDeleteHey Chickie Thank you for taking the time to make your video.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, my dress wasn't hand made, but I had the hat, gloves, shoes and even a little white purse. The picture is from 1964. I've been trying to scan all my old photos onto a portable hard drive. What's a card without a few cat hairs, Lucy always tries to contribute to mine. Love your Easter card and memories. We got our L'eggs from the Piggly Wiggly :)
ReplyDeleteOh man. I'm totally hot and sweat and panicky just THINKING about putting panty hose on. AHHH. For real, PTSD. yuck.
ReplyDeleteAdorable card.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute card with that egg carton!,,

ReplyDeleteFabulous painting - thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteNew Jersey didn’t put up tarps, they just closed on Sundays, pure and simple. Not a loaf of bread or a KIND bar to be had on God’s day. This little chick is adorable!
ReplyDeleteMy mom made our Easter dresses too! I made them for my daughter (and a matching one for her Cabbage Patch Doll) as well. I love your chick card! So CUTE!
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make our Easter outfits too. And I remember Leggs eggs too...my mom would still wish we wore pantyhose. She didn't get the memo we don't wear them anymore. lol. Your card is so cute. Love all the details, colors, patterns, and design. Just lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove your card! Always love your reminiscent stories. I kinda miss those Leggs hose (just cause the eggs were so fun to play with..lol). I do not miss the pantyhose! The only thing they are good for these days (at least in my house) is tying up tomato plants :-D
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute chick. Thanks for the video.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute card! Loved your pantyhose rant...so glad they are a thing of the past, but I did love those giant eggs!
ReplyDeleteYour story cracked me up! :-) I do remember the days of dressing up for Easter Sunday, stores not open till noon, no alcohol sales on Sunday and Sunday dinner for lunch! And I am so thankful pantyhose days are gone! I just love your Easter card and I have never heard of the Fadeout ink! Where have I been? Your coloring always amazes me!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your chickie card!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little card! Just perfect for a Easter card idea for sure! I think the carton is such a neat little idea. There is so many ideas i can think that i could do with that stamps set. Thanks so much for your time and ideas.
ReplyDeleteAdorable image. And I loved your story about the Leggs - Haven't thought of them in a long time. Today we would probably do something crafty with the plastic egg they come in. HA!
ReplyDeleteCute little chickie!

ReplyDeleteAdorable card!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your story of life experience! And the card video as well.
ReplyDeleteAdorable card! I enjoyed the tutorial, especially the part on watercoloring. Your cat is beautiful! She reminds me of my cat, Buddy, who's also black and sleek (and an attention seeker)!
ReplyDeleteLydia, your Easter pantyhose story brought back tons of memories of our homemade dresses, "laddered" stockings peppered with nail polish to make it through the day, patent leather shoes with scuff Mark racing stripes, and white gloves that looked beautiful until the minute we walked out the front door!! LOL
ReplyDeleteBeautiful card, BTW!
Shall I start by saying I genuinely have ocd lol but I had no probs with your fun video or meeting Maddie. Super fun, sweet card, love all the colours you used and how well your card turned out, really enjoyed your video and the pantyhose story ! X
ReplyDeleteCute card!
ReplyDeleteI loved your Leggs pantyhose story! Lol! I grew up in a small town in Illinois and our stores were just flat out closed on Sundays. You got what you needed by 6pm on Saturday or you went without. And we saved the Leggs eggs too and had fun playing with them for years growing up! Your card is WONDERFUL! Love your coloring!! Thanks for sharing! Jill
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute card and I love this little chick. Beautiful coloring!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable card! Love that cute chick in the egg carton!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your pantyhose story! I always remember applying clear nail polish to stop a run that started when I was wearing a new pair, and how it stuck to my leg....

ReplyDeleteLove the little chickie -- so cute and great design to make her pop! Love it!
ReplyDeleteSuch an adorable card with that sweet little chick!
ReplyDeleteLove the shading on the egg carton!
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing so hard at your pantyhose story. My aunt almost got kicked off a flight for not wearing pantyhose about, oh, 20 years ago. (Because she was flying on her sister's airline credit and representing the airline required wearing pantyhose?? I never quite understood what the world's snootiest agent's problem was.) So yeah, apparently the devil lives in pantyhose, but you have to wear them to fly! And yeah, there was a card somewhere? :) Actually, I love watching your paint; I always learn something from you. I'm going to have to look into the Aussie Red Gold, because I haven't found a yellow shadow shade that I'm happy with yet. Thanks for sharing and for giving me a giggle before going to church tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteCute card! I love the little chick in the egg carton!
ReplyDeletePrecious chickie card and I loved your Easter narrative. I remember the Blue Laws and even when the stores were closed on Sunday. I too, had to wear a fancy dress, gloves and a hat on Easter. The dress part was OK but I hated the gloves and hat.
ReplyDeleteThis is one adorable card!!!
ReplyDeleteLove that sweet chickie! Your card is so darn cute, Lydia
ReplyDeleteI watched the video while exercising yesterday! You cracked me up! Your water coloring is exquisite and I enjoyed watching you paint!!
