Well it shore is good to sea you today!! Pardon me while I make all manner of beachy puns today - because I just cannot resist.
This month's Hero Arts kit is beach themed, just in time for the dog days! It's ADORABLE! And I'm not a beach person - cue the paper white Irish, freckly skin - but I LOVE beachy stamps and images. It allows me to experience the peace and beauty of the shore without being near the water or getting sand on my hot dog.
My first card is with the images in the main kit. Now please keep in mind throughout this post that prior to stamping these cards, I dumped an entire tray of my Hero Arts mini inks onto the floor (yes, they all landed ink side down) and had to swatch them all to figure out which lid went with which ink pad, so you're lucky I didn't have their shark stamp eating all the birds and seals on my cards today! :)
I regained my serenity to make some really fun cards with the kit and add-ons.
First up - the spectacular layering waves images from the kit. (There are also layering clouds - see kit image below.)
They are designed to be stamped with the straight horizon line at the top, and the bottom edge forming waves on the sand, but you know I can't do anything like I'm supposed to, so I actually flipped it to make choppy waves. They have the fun footprints and sandy "hello" in the kit as well, and it's incredible how realistic it is.
After I stamped the waves, I masked that straight line, and then used direct to paper with Soft Vanilla ink for the sand. Then I set the Hello and the one set of footprints up on my MISTI, and put the MISTI grid paper on top of my card. I inked the stamps in Caramel ink, and stamped off once on the grid paper, and then removed the paper and stamped the second generation ink onto the sand. SO CUTE! Then for the second set of footprints, I used Caramel full strength to make those appear closer. The birds are stamped in Soft Granite and the waves are in Cornflower, Deep Ocean and then Navy. I accented the waves with a white gel pen. The sentiment is stamped in Intense Black.
Here is the amazing kit and what comes in it. The sand embossing powder is AMAZEBALLS.
Next up - I HAD to watercolor. I used the Beach Frame Fancy Die (an add-on, so it will not sell out) - I freaking love these frame dies - they are like a peek into a scene. So I cut mine out of watercolor paper, and then used Daniel Smith watercolor - just three pigments - to color it. Then I used my brown Blick Studio Pencil to add a few details, and I blended it with this amazing new-to-me blender pen my friend Fleurette introduced me too. As you know, I don't really like solvents, or stinky things, so I don't Gamsol blend, but this pen is an odorless, non-toxic pencil blend in pen from from Japan and I love it. I blended out all the brown accents with it very quickly. I mounted the whole frame on white cardstock.
Speaking of watercolor - at my team event which is the day before my public retreat starts - we did two fun watercolor exercises. The first one was to just mist a piece of watercolor paper and then dab watercolor onto it in spots until the whole page was covered, but there were still distinct pools of color - this is the same way that I create galaxy backgrounds - but we just didn't add grey/black to complete the galaxy look.
Then we dried those and just took a fine tip sharpie and outlined each pool of color. Some of them ended up looking like very detailed topographical maps! It was very fun and relaxing. So I took one of those pieces and cut it up for an accent strips on a few cards, including this one, with a hilariously relaxed dog from this Beach Please add-on stamp set and matching dies. The sentiment is from the main kit.
More watercolor - because me. :) I took my A&B and C&D Daniel Smith watercolor split palettes (you can learn about my watercolor split group here - it's a very inexpensive way to get a big Daniel Smith collection) and just used ALL the blues in both those splits to paint a piece of watercolor paper after misting it. After I dried it with my heat gun, I die cut it with the Wave & Sea Confetti die, and used that as a backdrop for my relaxed seal. I did no-line watercolor for the seal and pier after stamping them in Fadeout Ink, but I noticed that some of the other seals in the Seal of Approval add-on had eyelashes, so I added eyelashes to this one too with a multi-liner. There are matching dies for this set.
Next I went for a clean look with the stunning little mermaid from the kit. I used my Masked Pastels technique to create sort of a northern lights look on the card base. Video on this simple technique is below the card. Then I just stamped her and her rock in black and added a strip of black cardstock to anchor it. #seewhatididthere
I then cut out the Skylines die cut from white cardstock and put it on top of the watercolor panel and added the sentiment from this gorgeous mum set. That background stamp is what's simply fabulous. That stamp is an add-on so it won't sell out.
As usual, if you comment on all the blogs in the hop today, you'll have a chance to win a kit or a refund if you've already bought it or are a subscriber. The giveaway commenting closes June 10th at 11:50 PT.
If you are hopping along, your next stop is my beautiful and talented friend Nicole.
