Enjoy Today

Tierra Jackson is my jam.

As a designer, I know how hard it is to get comfortable with a range of styles, instead of just focusing on one style - I don't think very many people can pull that off. But she does in her illustrations and I really admire that. She has some ultra realistic images, and some super sweet story book type images like the one I'm using today.

So today, let's take our hats off for this artist.

This adorable fox image is my favorite size to paint - nearly card front sized. I wanted to do a video based on a conversation I had with my friend Susan Wymer, who makes beautiful cards, but is always asking for suggestions to make them even more amazing. One day she sent me pictures of two cards - one was mine and one was someone else's. They could not have been more different, but she said she loved them and what could she do to make her cards look like that. What she couldn't put her finger on that was present in both photos was the fact that they were done in strong complementary colors. As different as they were, that's what made them eyecatching. Once you get comfortable with complementaries, your work will be more appealing to you.

So I have a video for you on this card today which will be below, so I won't spend too much time on the details, but I just watercolored the fox with three Distress Inks: Rusty Hinge, Walnut Stain, and my unexpected color - Peacock Feathers. I used a waterbrush - I save my fancy brushes for actual watercolor, and I used punches to punch glimmer dots from this glitter paper. The cardstock is kraft and turquoise sea. The sentiment is from the fox set. I went all crazy and put one of the larger dots in the corner of the watercolor paper and then trimmed it. I like it!
So here's the video - if you don't like real-time watercolor, then just skip on by - I didn't speed anything up because I wanted to you to be able to see that this only took ten minutes. Supplies listed below the video.
