When I was little, we took a road trip to Mexico, and my mom bought me this little piece of folk art with a bird of paradise on it, and I was obsessed with that thing. I was also obsessed with the blue straw hat I got there, which was taken by a gust of wind on the bridge over the Rio Grande, but oh well.
The folk art is still with me - up high on a shelf above my TV. It has made it through oh so many moves. The folk art pieces (just google Mexican folk art tree of life with bird of paradise and you'll see what I'm talking about) feature the actual bird, not the plant, but as a result of my obsession with the art and the bird, I'm also obsessed with the plant! They are so showy and bright and they really do look like birds.
So I have a video for you today using this gorgeous bird of paradise stamp with a wet on wet technique using Karin Markers. (Coupon code UNDERSTANDBLUE15 for 15% off sitewide)
It's very easy and there's a fun splatter thing you can do with these markers too that I did, as well as watering down some Golden Rose Paper Glaze and splattering that. The sentiment on this card is from the new Dad's Day set, which you'll see below.
So here's the video for the bird of paradise card. Come back after for an amazing recipe and a funny story and a coupon code on the markers!
Now when I was making this card, I could not resist using my googly eye app to add an eye and text it to Nicole. Hee hee. It would be cute with a real life googly eye.
Speaking of tropical - who wants a virtual vacation, now that we can't have real ones? I will have a video on this card featuring the new You or Wifi stamp set in a few days, but this image is like a trip for your eyes! So much fun to paint. I painted it with Daniel Smith Watercolor, after stamping it in Fadeout ink, and enjoyed every minute of it. I added a little turquoise into the water for that Caribbean look, and added a few white gel pen accents for small waves around the dock and the island.
On my last card for today - I DISCOVERED A NEW TECHNIQUE! OMG I am so excited. I filmed it and will have the video posted soon. It's also a Karin Marker technique, and SO EASY! EEP I can't wait until you see it.
This set is a Father's Day set, but because of the image, and because we're all cooking all day every day now, I decided to make it more of a carpe diem card. It's our first pandemic. We should enjoy a cheeseburger when the opportunity presents itself, right? This paired with the set above had me singing Jimmy Buffett's Cheeseburger in Paradise while I was stamping.
For the sentiment, I did stamp surgery on the sentiment from this stamp set so that I could have it be vertical instead of horizontal. So fun, right?
White gel pen accents here too.

So - in my pandemic brain state, I did a lot of things twice this week. I ordered two of the same stamp set from Simon Says Stamp (I'll have a video with this set in the coming weeks) and I paid one bill twice. Have you done something similar lately? It's hard when the days all run together to keep everything straight. I need to make more lists.
We did see the flyover of the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds today in Austin, honoring healthcare workers. If you want to see the flyover near you, check this Facebook page for updates. The flight path does track hospitals, so near a hospital on a high piece of ground would be good - please don't gather in crowds or crowd hospital parking lots to see it. They fly REALLY low, so a high point nearby is perfect. We picked a community college near a hospital up on a hill.
If you want to see the rest of today's release - including AMAZING sequin mixes in stackable, compact-style containers - you can see it all here.
Hope you are well.
Loveyameanitbye.

Your googly eye is amazing and made me giggle. I can picture that sweet little blue hat flying off forever but I am glad you still have the art! Your cards are gorgeous! I am off to watch the video!
ReplyDeleteMy pandemic brain is in full control of my actions now too. I spent several minutes looking for two different things yesterday that were right in front of me. Love your cards and tips - and I would kill for a cheeseburger right now, hold the onions please.
ReplyDeleteWe live ½ mile from the hospital and will see tomorrow's flyover from our porch! I have to smile when I see either Bird of Paradise or Canna, they grew wild and crazy when we lived in Carlsbad, CA, she would cuss like a sailor when she had to cut them back, she was not happy with them at all. Your burger is making me hungry!!
ReplyDeleteGreat cards! Can not wait to see what your new technique with the Karin Markers is!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
