Watercolor Mottling Technique Video + Giveaway

You know how you'll be watercoloring along and then you accidentally drop too much water into an otherwise perfect wash for a sky?

Well a few times I've done that I thought that the patterns were actually beautiful and might make a fun technique, so that's what I'm bringing you today, and I do have a video below for you.

To create both cards today, I'm using the fabulous new watercolor brush markers from Altenew. They have such vibrant colors and are a lot of fun to paint with, as you'll see.

First, I stamped the rose image from this stamp set and made sure that was dry. Then I quickly painted around the rose with the Ruby Red watercolor marker. While it was still wet, I dropped in Citrus Burst to create the mottling. Then I just added a glitter paper die cut from this bundle.
For the second card I just painted inside the rose with the Ruby Red, and dropped Citrus Burst on that. The leaves were painted with Lagoon, and I dropped Citrus Burst into that wet color - I love the light it creates.

I cut those out with the matching dies, and glued them onto a script background from this pack. Then I added a die cut from this bundle again.
So here's the video of the technique, and then stay tuned below for a giveaway!

  2. Also, I have a question. A couple years back, you did a video where you decoupaged little squares of tissue paper in blues and greens on a glass candle holder. I loved it so much I went out and got all the supplies to do it!
Well, those supplies still sit. 🙄
And now I cannot find the original video. If you know what I’m talking about, could you possibly send me a link to the video? I would love that. Thank you!

  3. I love the look of watercolor, but it scares me to death. I can never get the light blending around the background object. I always have lines.

Thank you for the great inspiration and beautiful cards.

  76. I love that you took a "bad practice" and turned it into a cool look. Proof again that there is a place for pretty much any style of art.

As for what I need help with, that's a tough one. Mostly I know I need to practice more with watercolor, so that's step one. But I guess something I do have trouble with is getting nice depth. I think I'm using too much water, so everything blends out into one pretty flat midtone. So that's probably what I could use some help on. Thanks for offering!
