I really remember like it was yesterday the first time I saw Surrealist art as a child, just as I remember other art firsts, like Impressionism, Cubism. In college I got to take a lot of art history classes and learn what was behind some of the things that were, frankly, WACKY on the surface. It's all fascinating to me.
It's also kind of amazing how there were big shifts like surrealism that were so, so very different from everything at the time - as a person who makes art every day that seems so impossible - something truly NEW.
It's a perfect thing to ponder today, because I just don't think I've seen any surrealist style stamps like are in this month's kit! That's super exciting for the stamp world, and I am here for it!
In today's video, I'll show you how I built this scene with masking and coloring. I used the image and sentiment from the kit - I LOVE the sentiments, especially this one. I used Pumpkin Pie, Cup O' Joe and Summer Sky inks, artist tape, Copic markers and Derwent pencils that are soooo blendable. I loved wrapping this clock image around a clean, almost spooky scene made entirely of ink.
For my sneak peek card, I used this tutorial to create a checkerboard floor with a Mis-T ruler and a multiliner. Then I cut a circle with infinity dies from masking paper and masked off an oversized moon. I masked the floor too, and ink blended Navy ink over the rest. I used a fan brush and white acrylic ink to spatter stars before removing both masks. I stamped the door image from the set and colored it with Copics, reflecting the sky and clouds a bit on the door. Then I stamped and colored the bowler image and die cut it.

As a committed Magritte fan, I couldn't resist a tiny art gallery! I used the Wood Frame Dies to create a frame. I ink blended Summer Sky ink and fingerpainted clouds. I used the bowler and apple from the kit, and then used the little jacket from these lifestyle dies to complete my little nowhere man. Do you remember my chain link card from this post? All those little pieces from the fence I glued onto a card front and used the process described in that post to create the background. The sentiment is from this add-on set.
And last but not least - HOLY COW THIS BACKGROUND STAMP. Perfect for my zentangle loving heart! I used a white Posca pen to embellish the image after stamping it on Pitch Black in Unicorn ink. The sentiment is from this set.

Hi, Lydia - I am thrilled (over the moon, you might way LOL) with this kit! Your cards are AMAZING and COOL! I studied a lot about Surrealism in college and as a French major read my share about les Impressionnistes, les Surréalistes, and others... plus read poetry by Apollinaire, Gala's first husband, Paul Eluard, and more... fascinating stuff.

Kevin Nakasagwa, I may have messed up his name. He does videos on YouTube. He shows his stuff in StampJunkies all the time. He stamps on glossy paper and has his own rubber stamp line.
DeleteHe has some Videos that he flips thru page by page of old stamp show catalogs from the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. There were a lot of companies back in the beginning days of stamping that had these type of images. I have never yet taken any art classes like this to have learned. But I bet knowing the background information really helps to understand this type
Of art. As a college age person I did not have the ability, time, or money to take art classes like this. But now as an adult, I would love to take
Some sort of Once a week night art class like this. Even for fun. Maybe I should look into it. Those teachers that had a true passion for their subject really can teach you so much.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the MMH kit preview my immediate reaction and comment was... Lydia will be in her glory! The clock...in a ceiling wall transition or melting off of an edge.... love it so much! That image is my favorite of all. The shadow on the door, mesmerizing. And nowhere man...ya.

You said, "I'd like to hear what your favorite style of art is!" That's a tough choice. As a teenager, impressionism was hands down my favorite. I found it super inspiring. I still do, but these days, there are many other styles that inspire me just as much. There's so much interesting art that doesn't necessarily fit into a particular style or school.
