Tips for Adding Detail to Small Images

I have a little walkthrough for you today of some tips I use when I'm working with small images, and I still want them to have fun details and dimension. This is a sneaky peeky of the new Hero Kit! This image I cut out of a full background stamp image that is this incredible - a full 6x6 city neighborhood background.

So these images individually are fairly small, but that doesn't mean they can't have a lot of details!

Here are my tips.

1) Cut your images out carefully - take your time and use both a craft knife - I love this teeny one the best - and then use a dark grey or black marker to go around all the cut edges to eliminate white edges.
2) Do base coloring with alcohol markers. I prefer these fineliner ones the best for detailed images. (Coupon code below).
3) Using a fineliner dark grey marker to create dimension around gables, under windows, around tree edges etc. Simple coloring only - don't worry about blending it out.
4) Using a white paint pen - I used a fine point pen - add dots or dashes for highlights.
5) Layer color - for example, the trees and the grass are the same green as the trees. But after coloring the grass, I added a yellow layer to differentiate it but still keep it harmonious.

I laid this piece across an opening cut with a Circle Infinity Die for max contrast.

Y'all are going to have some fun on Monday. I have NINE cards for you! :)

  5. Lydia, I love the contrast of the colours on the houses against that black circle infinity die. Looks super! Thank you for explaining little extra things you can do to make those details stand out & give dimension. I am always drawn to dies & stamps that have houses &/or buildings. This die alone has so much versatility & it would be a wonderful addition to my craft supplies.

  6. I love that you demonstrate the detail of the background stamp. It isn't every background stamp that can boast this ability. Lovely card!
