VIDEO: A Frog Story

When I was little, I loved reptiles and amphibians, and they were plentiful in the somewhat swampy town I grew up in. Horny toads were plentiful, as were anoles, and I became pretty darn expert at catching both without getting bitten - I learned to put horny toads to sleep by rubbing them between the eyes. I've never met an animal that I didn't turn into a friend, and the wide variety of lizards were no exception.

But, while I LOVE frogs and toads, they were a little harder to befriend for some reason. They are less willing to enter relationships - perhaps there are some frog betrayals or trust issues we mammals know nothing of. But that didn't stop me from trying.

My friend David's mom used to take us to the park (probably to keep us from destroying her house) and would grill hamburgers and hotdogs for us and let us expend all our mischievous energy. One of the parks we went to had a little creek and this creek was always FULL of these microscopic, almost black frogs. They were SO cute. Sometimes you could be quick enough to hold one for a minute and inspect it, but we were all animal lovers and never took them home. Every time I think of her - such a sweet lady - I think of those little picnics and those little frogs. Maybe I'll take a road trip one day and see if they are still there.

I have a video for you today of an alcohol ink background that you can just do with your markers for one of the Dare to Get Dirty challenges. If you don't have alcohol inks and the sparkly mixatives, just use markers and a sparkle pen! I used Graphit Markers (coupon in footer) and a sparkle pen, these needle tipped alcohol bottles and finished the card with this adorable shopaholic frog - why not a pink frog? - and the Hello die. So fun and easy. Many thanks to Patty Bennett for this simple mixed media technique! I love these vibrant pink markers.

So here is the quick video! In the video I try vellum, Duralar and iridescent vellum - and I didn't like the way it looked on iridescent vellum - all the ink ran together and was boring. I felt like vellum and Duralar were pretty similar, for what it's worth.

  1. My dad used to jog around a track that was fairly near our house (it was part of an all-boys school that I told my parents I would someday attend... and ended up attending after it became co-ed). He'd take my siblings and I to play while he jogged. They had some sort of draining system that went all around the track, and if you pulled up a lid and stuck your hand in there... there was almost always a frog or two. My mom encouraged us to bring them home to put in the garden. So we did. In retrospect I never saw a frog in our yard, so I'm guessing they didn't make it. We should have left them where we found them, like you did!

  2. Good Morning from Death Valley! It maybe 4 am here, (well now it's 5:30). I am getting out my supplies and I'm all ready to make my frog cards. Thanks to you, I have the frog stamps from Picket Fence. I can't tell you how many of your suggestions I follow up with. But, I'm sure my bank could tell you.
I wanted to send out my comment before I get started.
    Have a creative day
    Thanks,
    Mischelle
