A Childhood Craft, Revisited

Some of my favorite techniques to rediscover are kid crafts from my childhood, like the string art video I did. Not only do they bring back fun memories, sometimes the simplicity of kid-friendly crafts is refreshing - no pressure to use advanced skills to make a card. So today, in honor of the adorable crayon dies from Concord & 9th, I decided to use a crayon craft I did in fourth grade with my favorite teacher Mrs. Thompson - the suncatcher technique with melted crayons. So I have a video on this using both crayons and encaustic wax (cards in that order below). First up - crayons and crayons! I cut a crayon and a label with this adorable die set. Using my crayon background from the video, I used this heart die to cut it out. You could do large sheets of this and use any shaped die! That's my favorite way to make mixed media or "messy" backgrounds into clean cards. The stamp set that matches the crayon dies has these sweet scribbles you'll  see below and there's an insanely cute crayon box die as well! The crayon die has three parts - the crayon die itself, the label, and then the sentiments and stripes, so you can make any color you want. I stuck with black and white since my background is so colorful.

For the second card, I used the three encaustic blocks I got in Santa Fe - I love these because they're hard enough to grate - so you can see I got a lot more detail with a Microplane than with the pencil sharpener shavings from the crayons. I will be using these again a lot, I have a feeling. I used Quinacridone Magenta, Cadmium Lemon and Turquoise. These are made in the USA and such intense colors. The pattern you get is definitely dependent on the size of your wax grating/shaving/etc. so you actually have a lot of control over the outcome. My sister is an encaustic expert - I just dabble - but this is addicting. Here is an encaustic painting I did forever ago, and here's a card I did with encaustic forever ago. I'd forgotten how much fun this medium is. The sentiment is from this set and the heart die, as well as the other one, are in the matching die set.

Finally, I did an ATC card set with this adorable stamp set that is perfect for kid or adult valentines! The images and sayings are adorable, and the matching die is PERFECT for ATCs! For all but the taco, I stamped the sentiments on a piece of white cardstock I had cut with the same die, and then just lined up the stitches! SO cute. The taco sentiment is so sweet. I cut the images with the matching dies and colored them with my alcohol fineliners (coupon code in the footer).

They have some more fun stuff out today - an insanely adorable small gift box die - and the crayon dies I used above fit perfectly in there so you can make a little box of crayons! Look at their sneak peek! Ack! I can't wait to play with this!

So here is the video with this fun, crayon-themed technique.
