Teach the Teacher - With a Habitrail

If you teach classes a lot, which I do, you need to take frequent breaks to be a student. Or, frequent breaks to doodle around on your own outside of your work so your creativity doesn't go poof.

At the end of CREATE in Columbus - we had taught for two days - hundreds of people - a beautiful fairy appeared at the end when we were packing up our booth.

That fairy's name was Kristina Werner.

And that fairy handed me the most adorable make & take from her booth. We had not seen one other booth the whole time, and I was thrilled to see this adorable little kit. They had even done most of the work for me - all I had to do was put it together.

So I said to myself: "Self - when you get home and unpack and catch up on work and do the taxes and pay the bills and do laundry and cook and open a week's worth of mail - YOU ARE GOING TO REWARD YOURSELF WITH THIS LITTLE CARD."

And I did. The sentiment is on a piece cut with their stitched oval dies. This is the patterned paper used.

I had a Habitrail when I was little and a series of hamsters, so I found this bundle exceedingly charming. The matching dies cut openings for the hamsters to stick out of. So cute. Almost makes me want a hamster again. Key word being almost. I am happy with my paper hamsters instead.

This was such a fun break in my day.
Did you have hamsters or do you now? I'd love to hear stories. Loveyameanitbye.

  1. We had hamsters in Indonesia for a brief time and I will never tell you the story because you'll cry.

  3. Goodness -this is so cute! I love the faces of the hamsters. We 3 kids all had hamsters when we were little, and my youngest son had 2 gerbils when he was in grade school - name Tom & Jerry :) Sweet little things :)

  4. I took in somebody else's hamster as a kid when they were on holiday, and accidentally left the cage door open, and the d*mn thing ran off, and I had to lower all the blinds and sit in the dark till its night activity impulses kicked in and he came out from under somewhere. All the time I was scared the cat might have gotten to him first.
I will never, ever allow another hamster under my roof as long as I live.

And then came the summer when we looked after my stepdaughter's guinea pig. This time, it was my husband who left the cage door open, and the cage was in the garden. Lots of bushes to crawl under trying to catch the bloody pig, and I was NINE (!) months pregnant at the time. So no more guinea pigs in this house, either.

You asked for stories - here they are! Your card may be cute, but it gives me hamster PTSD.

  5. I just love Kristina, and her card kit, which you assembled beautifully. We had dwarf hamsters when the kids were little... they looked like pom poms and they would run around in these plastic balls when they weren’t in their tubular habitats.

    1. It was pre-colored for us. We just literally had to put it together :)

  7. Adorable card Lydia! My sister & I had hamsters when we were younger. They lived in the basement and one night one of them got out, never to be seen again. We left food on the floor for it. Then we got guinea pigs, Tippy & Zippy. They never got out but when we were going to get a dog, Tippy & Zippy left our house forever. My mom told us they were going to a farm.

  8. Oh my!!! I had hamsters...actually about 30 of em after all was done. We had hamster condos...stacked cages on a table. My first one was named Hammy (how original) and turns out she was pregnant. So then we had three. They really should not be left together for more than a nanno second. Because then we had six. My parents could have saved themselves so much money if they would have agreed to the kitten I really wanted!!! Hahah

  9. I had dwarf hamsters growing up - Elmo and Big Bird. And yes, they had a little habitrail cage. It had a wheel, and a tube running track, and a tower. Big Bird wasn't a very good climber (she was a little chubby) and never could climb the tube to the tower.
