Twinkle, Twinkle

At CHA, I got to hang out with a woman I ADORE - Wendy Ramlakhan, the owner of Sugar Pea Designs. Wendy and I met when I was in Orlando years ago for a Stampin' Up! event - and she came over and had dinner with us, during which we all laughed so hard. The dinner in Phoenix was no different.

I think we even scared the cardinals. :)

Anyway, she is a delightful human being - you can see our Crafty Chat session with her here - it's great.

She brought one of her illustrators with her - Becky Pearce - who is also a delightful woman. We had so much fun. One of the cool things Wendy revealed in her Crafty Chat interview was that she chose her illustrators from children's books she saw at Barnes and Noble. It gives her images  a sweet and youthful style.

I think you could do an effective test to find out if someone is mentally unstable just by asking them: "Do you love children's book illustrators?" Yes or no - all no's have to be locked up in a hatch. I LOVE illustrated children's books. Everything from Edward Gorey, to Alice to Where the Wild Things Are. Some of my favorite art in the world is from children's books.

Today, I am guest hopping with Sugar Pea and My Sweet Petunia, and I chose an image that absolutely stole my heart - Twinkle, Twinkle. I love the love for her bear, her squeezing him tight, the fact that they are alone together, and the hopeful, wishful window. Children are often alone in children's books - off in imaginary worlds, or in places where their parents can't find them, like Oz or Wonderland. This image evokes all those worlds and stories, I think.

I had to call in reinforcements on this card - texting my friends Yoo-Rah and Kelli for advice on what to put in the window - a night sky or a blue sky - but the name of the stamp set won us over, and I had to go for stars.

So I stamped the image in Daffodil Delight and then did no-line watercolor on it. Then I colored the sky. As the last step, I stamped it again on label paper and masked off everything but the sky and then splattered white ink on it for the stars. So much fun.

But not as much fun as prizes! So if you comment on all the blogs in today's hop, you can win prizes from BOTH Sugar Pea and My Sweet Petunia. For MY blog, please leave me a comment telling me your favorite children's book!!

Here are all the stops on the hop! Enjoy the creations - these are some awesome artists.

  2. I totally agree with you about children's book artists! I worked in a library and LOVED "reading" the children's book and LOOKING at the art work. Adorable stamp = adorable card, too.

  4. This is beautiful!!!! The image causes the viewer to ponder what she's thinking. Precious. I love children's books. I was never so happy as when my kiddos' scholastic book orders came in!!!

  6. Absolutely adorable card. I will always love picture books and I have many favorites. But I still cannot read, "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch without getting choked up. Love, love, love that book.

  8. Such a lovely card with the Sugar Pea stamp set, Lydia. I remember being fascinated with the photographed children's book, The Lonely Doll. I now know the author's troubled childhood was reflected in the images in her published books but I loved the "reality" of the photographed pages.

  11. I could not adore you any more than I do if I tried!! This is without a doubt the most gorgeous card I have ever seen made with this image. It truly looks like it came straight from a page in a children's book. xoxo

  12. My favorite? I don't remember having one as a child. My choice was always for my mom to sing to me. My favorites with my kids: Babies by Gyo Fujikawa - "Babies are very little, soft, warm, and cuddly. They're always lying around, eating, sleeping, laughing, and crying." Yes, I still know it by heart! My oldest carried it around like it was her blankie. Then I loved Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst - "some days are like that, even in Australia." My son loved that book. For a while we had to read that every night. Also Dr. Seuss - One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. When I was pregnant with numbers 2,3, and 4; we loved Fran Manushkin's Baby, Come Out!, and The New Baby with illustrations by Eloise Wilken.

Every night we read three books. Then we progressed to chapter books. Then……they all read their books themselves. For over fifteen years I read three books a night. Goodnight Moon, Berenstain Bears, Little Critter books, Mercer Mayer's books, The Velveteen Rabbit, Beatrix Potter's books, Peter Pan (not Disney! the REAL Peter Pan.) How could I have a favorite? I suppose if I have to pick, then it goes back to the beginning. "Babies are very little, soft, warm, and cuddly……"

  20. What a beautiful image, and the no line water colouring is fabulous! My favourite children's book - I still the copy I was given when I was 10 - is Wind in the Willows. Even without the terrific illustrations, the writing is so good that you can imagine Mr. Toad wildly careening about town in his motor car! :)

    And your humor.
I enjoy the drawings in the old Barbar books, but I have a book that was given to my grandmother when she was nine. It is called Red Cap Tales by S.R. Crockett. There are only about fifteen illustrations, but they are lovely. Kind of dark, but realistic.

  66. Kevin Henkes wrote a book, Chrysanthemum. It's about a little mouse who loves her name. It's absolutely perfect. Then she starts school and the other children make fun of her name because it's so long, and she doesn't think it's so perfect after all. It's a wonderful lesson about bullying. The illustrations are marvelous! Your card is divine!!!

  75. Adorable! I don't have a favourite children's book as such, but I remember devouring lots of books by famous Dutch writers such as W.G. van der Hulst and Dick Laan (Pinkeltje series, translated into English as Fingerling). I still own several of these books. I fact, I kept all of the children's books I have ever received. Most of the illustrations were fairly simple and in black and white. Love how the current generation can enjoy the illustrations in full colour.
