A Calm Sea, A Skilled Sailor, a Cactus and a MISTI Giveaway

I did my Stampin' Up! pre-order last night. That meant I had to stay up reallllly late - it opened at 1 AM my time - so to try to stay awake, I decided to film a video. That's a nice quiet activity that doesn't bother anyone and it was actually really nice because I had no distractions - radio, etc.

I wanted to use the little boat from the Greetings From set - and make it look more realistic, and less graphic so I thought no-line watercolor would be fun with such a tiny image.

It was fun - took about half an hour start to finish - you can see the whole process in the video below.

I paired it with that awesome HUGE greeting from Adventure Awaits. I love this phrase - it's so true.

I read a great article the other day (which I've now lost) about the culture of perpetual offendedness we seem to be creating.

People want to start their day with outrage, for some reason.

I don't want to start my day with outrage. I want espresso, bacon and an art project.

There's also a great quote making the rounds on Facebook right now - "The world is full of cactus - but we  don't have to sit on it." ~Will Foley

So true. And every now and then if you run into a cactus, like I did last summer while geocaching, and you spend 15 minutes pulling 40 prickly pear thorns out from two inches into your thigh, you learn some VERY valuable things. Also, that reminds me - I probably need a tetanus shot.

See?

It's all about the lessons.

Isn't that a fun combo? I was really pleased with it when I was done. Then I placed my order and was even MORE pleased. My catalogs are on the way, so hit me up if you need one. I'll show some peeks in the next few days.

Here's the supply list for the card:
So since you'll see in the video how this whole card might have gone into the trash without the MISTI, Iliana was kind enough to offer to give one of YOU darling people a MISTI package - a MISTI, a paper pad, the Novus cleaner and two magnets. I appreciate her kindness and generosity - I suspect she knows that you all are the nicest, smartest, best looking people on earth.

Want to win? All you have to do is leave a comment on this post answering the following question:

What is the one stamping technique
or skill you'd most like to learn?

Leave your answer in a comment below before 11 PM on Monday, May 11th to be entered in a random drawing for the MISTI! And be sure and stop by the My Sweet Petunia Forum and say thank you for this generous gift for my readers!

Now - enjoy the video, which happens to feature Bruce Willis. Really. Watch! :)

Loveyameanitbye.

  1. I'd love to be able to watercolor like a pro. I don't spend enough time practicing my coloring or painting. NEED MORE PRACTICE!

    1. The way I practice is to stamp the same image ten times and just sit down and experiment - it's a success if I get one I like but it definitely helps to do multiples.

  2. I would actually love to learn the no lines watercoloring, and just more coloring tricks in general. I could spend all day long coloring! Beautiful card, thanks for a chance at a great prize, and I'll head over to My Sweet Petunia and say thanks there as well!

  3. A misti you know I want one. I have been sitting here trying to figure out what technique I want to learn...I've tried so many and I'm not afraid to try new ones. I guess the one I want to try is the one I haven't heard of yet, but knowing you my crafty friend: You will find it and make me want to do it and go spend lots of $ I don't have and I will have to mcgyver a way to do it.

  4. I would love to learn how to do brayering without leaving streaks. I have never mastered that technique (but I can sponge like a boss!). I have a Misti, but I would LOVE to win this for my mom, whose hands shake a little and cause her frustration, so she doesn't stamp anymore. :-(

  5. I have tons of techniques to learn but after looking at your gorgeous card I would love to learn the no line watercolor technique! And thank you to Iliana for the chance to win a MISTI!!! Cool Beans!!

  7. I would like to learn how to do the smooshed watercolor. I've watched videos but I always end up with either brown or one color. Maybe I am selecting the wrong colors to combine but I just canNOT do it properly. Grrrrrrr

  8. Ohhhhhhh purty card! And I totally need a MISTI, you enabler, you! As for what tech I wanna learn? I don't think it's really a technique but I wanna learn to watercolor like Dina. It's that sort of abstract-y, not quite realistic, outside-the-lines, free form watercoloring that eludes me. My brain keeps telling me to stay inside the lines, make the image look like it does in real life, and I'm trying to break away from that.

  9. Ok, so Bruce Willis' name does not constitute his presence. Just clarifying. I love your card! I, myself, am an ocean girl as opposed to a prairie girl. As a matter of fact, ask anyone who knows me what my favorite color is.....it's water! As for the technique (or skill) I want to learn, I'm pretty certain I'd like to learn how to use the Misti. I have hereto avoided all videos or blog posts related to them, but you, my dear, are so persistent in your joyfulness at having and using one, that I must now relent. Sigh. Thank you, dear Lydia.

I love your videos so whatever technique you come up with I'm in.I look forward to seeing what new stamps are coming out!!

  36. I'd like to learn how to make tiles. I've seen them on Pinterest and I've watched a couple of YT videos. Very cool

  49. I would most like to learn how to create a background on the Misti using a long thin stamp. Sometimes they are called background builders. How to measure and mark the paper to move the card up and down. Rather than moving the stamp up and down. Because those long stamps aren't always easy to get perfectly straight once let alone many times. Thank you.

  57. what a fantastic giveaway Lydia i probably dont qualify as i live in the UK but i would like to pop my 2 pennies in ;)

i would like to learn how to do reflection technique i have been stamping over 20 years and yet i can never get that to go right!

I am also learning as much as i can about copics, i have just got hooked and am building my collection slowly.

Have a great day, i also dont understand why people get so offended all the time these days, im pretty sure we used to just say ''hmm thats a bit below the belt, i dont like that'' and then move on with our lives probably spending less time with or watching/listening the person that said/did it - it seems we have to make a song and dance about things now and a snarky fb status to see how many likes we get......i'm not entirely sure this is progress......

any hoo have a great day Lydia i hope you get your bacon ;)

  71. How to effectively and creatively use the Misti (if I had one :)

  82. I can't seem to get a smooth color on cardstock when I use the Distress Inks and the blending tool. Tried both kinds and I still get obvious circles or rectangles. I pretend they are clouds..but would like help getting it right. Love your site. I think that the MISTI is a most amazing thing!

  85. I would really love to learn how to put together cardstock, DSP, inks, stamp sets and add ons like: buttons, ribbons, bakers twine, brads and various punch outs to make my version of a gorgeous card. I know, run on sentence! But I didn't know how else to put it down in words. I see other people designing their own masterpieces, but mine just kind of fall flat. It's a tall order, (I do realize this) but I remain hopeful!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I just discovered your blog when I was looking for examples of watercoloring... so that would be the technique I'd like to learn. I enjoyed your video and what a great salesperson you are for the Misti, having to reink the sentiment over and over again and have it turn out so crisp! I'm a believer and now I'm a follower of yours as well. Thanks for the opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oooh, a MISTI would be a wonderful tool to have! Thanks to you and Iliana for the opportunity to win one. ... I am way past kindergarten, but I still need help with all kinds of coloring. Cards can quickly become too heavy for one postage stamp, so I'm always on the lookout for ways of adding texture and depth without adding weight.

  101. Looks like a LOT of stampers want to win the MISTI -- I surely could have used one yesterday as I was making some graduation cards. It would be perfect when EVERYTHING else on the card is tip top and then you stamp the sentiment and part of it is just not as dark as the rest. Not horrible, but not perfect. Ahhh well. What I would like to learn (besides learning to say "no thank you, I don't really need more paper, pens, stamps, ....". You get the idea) is an easy way to make those cards that look uncolored at first and then magically the image is colored when you pull a string. They are so neat and I did one once with LOTS of help but the helper did most of it so I didn't learn anything. Anything except that I still don't know how to do it. I did learn that. LOL. Thanks for the opportunity to make a better mousetrap -- oh, I mean card.

I so appreciate your wonderful videos and your calming voice, Lydia! Heartfelt thanks for the chance to win a MISTI! ♡Dawn Y.

Technique.....hmmmm.....how about colored pencils. I LOVE them, but they just don't wanna work right for me....LOL I can never get them to blend right and not streaky (regardless of pressure) and maybe it's the colors. I don't know, but they do NOT like me :-D

  115. I would love to learn masking techniques to make some of those beautiful landscape scenes I've seen. You know, the ones with the rising moon over the mountains which tower over the little village nestled by the bay and so on and so forth. By the way, this was a great demonstration video! You totally sold me on the MISTI. I thought it was mostly a tool for people who like to create cards in numbers. Using it to re-stamp an image (especially a sentiment) gives it a whole new purpose. Can't tell you how many cards I've ruined with the last step - stamping the sentiment. Aaargh..

So I guess the technique I need to learn is coloring, any kind. I was doing ok with the blendies but that is gone now. Water coloring with the aqua pen is beyond me. I try to use blender pens instead with colored pencils. Of course we no longer have SU pencils either. Thanks for a chance to win MISTI.

  120. I'm a new card maker and just got my embossing powders last week, but am having trouble getting my ultra high clear powder to stick to my versafine ink...so at this point...THAT is what I want to learn! How to use the ultra high clear powder with versafine! If I get that figured out, I'm sure there will be something else...it's just irritating me right now that I can't get it to work. LOL

  121. Lydia,
Your card is stunning! Loved learning from your video and as always, love your writing! Still waiting for you to write a book. I would like to get better at water coloring because sadly with my tools and lack of expertise, I feel like a faux-watercolorist rather than a real one. And the MISTI, it looks like a dream so, please 🙋 pick me!

  122. Love your Bruce Willis feature-hahaha- after seeing this video- I want a Misti- no more hot messes with stamping sentiments or images- as for a skill I would like to learn- that would definitely be coloring- I have Copics, Blenabilites and Prismacolor pencils- just need some pointers on using them

  123. I would LOVE to learn how to use Copics like a professional. (FIRST I need to GET them as I don't even OWN any but I want to soon!)

  125. I would like to learn the reflection technique, or whatever they call it when you stamp a tree and then it's reflection in the water. Every time I have tried it hasn't come out that well.

  127. I'd love to work on the "mixed" part of mixed media -- I can hang with an individual medium, but all the fun layering and combining has eluded me thus far. PS: LOVE your card! The mix of scale makes me happy.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I'd like to learn how to do shading, probably as in watercoloring. Even if I think I "know"

what to do, it doesn't come out how I would like it to. Love watching how you DO know what to

    do!

  129. I would love to learn the kissing technique. I have never done this technique! Or how to color/blend with the blendabilities....I can color but it does not blend well. Thanks for the chance to win a MISTI!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  132. First you blog is funny, informative and always has beautiful artwork! Thanks for sharing with us who are just starting out. The technique that would be nice to see is how to use water color pencils and crayons. Got them then they were discontinued. Help! The MISTI would be awesome to win. My hands don't work as well as they used to do to a medical condition but I refuse to give up a craft I love.

  133. COLORING: watercolor, copic, colored pencil...I need help (practice) with them all. :)

  134. Currently I'm struggling with the Lotus Blossom 3-step-stamping .... most of the results are less than thrilling. LOL Thanks for the opportunity to win the MISTI and for sharing your great wit with all of your readers, Lydia!

  135. I'd love to be able to learn how to create in a 'vintage' style. I love this style of cards when I see them but struggle with selecting and putting together all the different elements. Of course I'd love learning how to use a MISTI too!

  136. I have a couple techniques I'd like to master.. My no.1 would be masking. I love the effects that it gives but dont feel like I know how to do it well enough to use it on my cards. I'd also like to hone my color skills for all of the multi level floral stamps that are coming out! Loving your blog. Thanks for sharing😊

  139. I bought a set of the Kuretaki Gamsai Tambi watercolors, and have been experimenting with them, but I'm not getting the results I'd like to see. So my wish-list technique is to learn to watercolor--like that lovely little sailboat on your beautiful card!

  142. What a beautiful card and such a great sentiment! The technique I would like to learn most (and I'm working on it...really, I am) is coloring with alcohol markers. I am always in awe when I see beautifully colored images and projects and would love to learn how to shade and color . I also really need to start using my stencils more creatively and maybe leap into some mixed media.

  145. I haven't tried bokeh yet! Can you believe it? I just haven't gotten there. And May is as busy as December, so it may be awhile before it happens. :-)

  146. Hi. I love your blog. Thanks so much for sharing your art, life and humour. I would really like to know more about card layout. I tend to go for more CAS cards but often feel something is missing even when I follow card layout examples. I love making all the parts (backgrounds, embellishments, main images...) and I have a lot of them because I'm not sure how to tie them together into a card. Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Wow, i am so impressed with the way you approached this beautiful card and I am in awe of how you used the MISTI to make that sentiment element really pop. I have had my issues with faint or partially stamped images that ruined a card but now there's no excuse. That is, if I win the MISTI, lol!
I am a fairly new stamper so I pretty much want to learn how to do everything. I don't have a lot of time though...being the Mom of two young girls, so I think that watercoloring, or making CAS cards would be the most manageable for me. Thanks for your fun and helpful videos and your clever blog posts!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Haha, I have to say that seeing you reference Bruce Willis meant that I absolutely had to watch the video..you are so sneaky!! Thank you for showing us how indispensable that MISTI really is when stamping on textured paper like this. The more I learn about the MISTI the more I realize that I really do need one of these. Your card is gorgeously colored and I love the way you masked the sail boat so that you were able to make it stand out against the sky and sea. I would love to learn how to work with water-colors in different ways, and also to try my hand at mixed media like embossing paste and stenciling.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I would like to learn to color better with dry colored pencils. I also am not great at stamping on glossy cardstock, and maybe that is where the MISTI would come in handy.

I love that sentiment on the card. Really good one!

  162. I'd like to learn how to mix and match patterns. I still, after all of these years, struggle with that. I would love to put stripes and flowers and paisleys together (oh my!), but mine always look like Dr. Seuss threw up on a card. It may have something to do with my inability to look at my own work without picking it apart. For once, I do have something in common with many actors who cannot watch themselves in their own movies. Would love a MISTI to help me with that! Thanks! Deborah S.

  176. Any watercoloring technique videos are appreciated. I ordered the Kuratake Gansai, and I am having a hard time blending them. Their colors are so vibrant, but they are very different than coloring with distress inks. I'm okay if I heart emboss a line art image and watercolor between the lines, but I have problems controlling the effect when I try the no line method. I learn so much from all of your videos, so thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  180. I would love to improve my coloring skills (shading, etc)

    ReplyDelete
  181. Masking is the technique I'd like to learn. I've tried to do it -- and I've been stamping and scrapping since 1997, but I just don't get it! Which layer do you stamp first? How do you decide which one gets masked? What's the best way to cut / position a mask? I have heard that the MISTI is supposed to make masking easier, and I'd really like to give it a try!

    ReplyDelete
  182. Wow. What a beautiful card and wonderful post. I love that you want to start and end your day with a smile. No need to be courting negativity for a happy life it does not make. What an absolutely wonderful prize. The MISTI is definitely a game changer! I would love to learn how to do no-line watercoloring and copic marker blending. I am an absolute and utter failure at it but hope to practice practice practice!

    ReplyDelete
  183. I agree with some of the others - watercoloring! It's so hot right now and I'd like some hints - kinds of paper, brands of watercolors that don't cost me an arm - something reasonable and kinds of brushes I need as a beginner.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Recently bought a couple of multi step stamps and while I think I have a handle on lining them up I need help on choosing coordinating ink pad colors. Love your blog! And thanks to Iliana.

  185. You kept me company with this video the other day! Oh my yes, What is it about not being able to say anything without offending SOMEONE or people constantly putting up inflammatory posts on FB? Yikes. I almost deactivated FB last week because it was so depressing!. Espresso, bacon and an art project seem like a much better way to start the day! Oh gosh! Just one technique I want to get better at??? Ok, Coloring. watercoloring, copic coloring, intense pencil coloring.
    Sweet give-away btw!

  186. Hi Lydia,

I would love to get better results at multi-step stamping. And I need an improvement on my basic stamping and creating a card techniques, so it won't me take all day to make one single card. :D

Thank you so much for the opportunity to win a MISTI! :)

    Thanks,
    elynn.
