Loved to Distraction

I got a chance to see a fantastic documentary last night.

It's called Unforeseen, and it's a movie about the development in Austin which impacts the Barton Creek Watershed and Barton Springs Pool.

The primary development the movie deals with is my neighborhood, and so a lot of the issues raised hit pretty darn close to home. The movie's director and many of the stars were watching it with us, and spoke for a while afterwards.

What I came away with is that I believe that we have have loved our city to distraction.

Austin is such a beautiful place, and Barton Springs is downright magical. We love and treasure these things as sacred and consider them to be at the heart of what we love about living here.

But at the same time, we are distracted. We're distracted by the opportunity to live so close to all these things, but just far enough to be able to afford a decent sized home. We are distracted by all the things we want to buy, and see and do on our way to that beautiful pool. We're distracted by great companies that call Austin home and employ us and our friends. And so we take our love for the little jewels of this city for granted as part of that package.

At one point during the movie, they have a beautiful helicopter shot of Central Park and they talk about how crazy the people that wanted to preserve that incredible space inside the city must have sounded to the developers.

If you've never wandered through Central Park or had lunch at the boat house, it needs to go on your bucket list. Because as much as I love all the things you think of when you think of New York, I did indeed leave my heart in Central Park.

It gave us all a lot to think about. Now are the times that it would come in handy to be a Libra, and find balance in all things. :)

But I guess for now, I'll just channel Lady Bird Johnson, and celebrate the kind of growth that brings us flowers, and forget about the kind that brings us big box stores for a while.

  1. Hopefully, the documentary and your blog will raise awreness that the toddler rule of "I want this AND I want that" doesn't always work. Lovely krafty card.. :-)
