I'm Jammin...

Like a crazy person, two days before I left for convention, I took part in cherry fest at Whole Foods. Cherries went from $5.99 a pound to $1.99 a pound. So naturally, I bought 20 pounds. Because that's sensible, right?

I then spent the next two days, not making swaps, packing or making downline gifts, but instead, pitting cherries and frantically making jam, homemade maraschino cherries, cherry vanilla ice cream and cherry and orange zest infused vodka. Oh yeah, and freezing 8 pounds of pitted cherries for a future adventure.

I learned to pit like a pro. My house looked like a crime scene. My nails were dyed red for convention.

I don't know if you know this, but each time you use a cherry pitter (which is ingenious, by the way), a fine mist of cherry juice is sprayed all over you and your kitchen in a very CSI sort of way.

Had a policeman come to our house during that time, I might have been typing this post from the pokey.

But I got it cleaned up before I left. And I did my downline gift at Mel's house on Monday thankfully. As usual, the universe sent me the message that procrastination is extremely fun and productive.

But I did really enjoy the canning process. There's something very satisfying about knowing that you captured the magic of a fruit at the height of its perfection so that you can enjoy it later.

Especially in homemade cherry vanilla ice cream.

So I decided to immortalize the process for one of the Dare to Get Dirty challenges this week, hosted by the one and only, insanely talented Kittie.

I used a set and matching Framelits you can see in EXACTLY ONE DAY in the Holiday Mini!! SQUEEEEE!!!

Wait until you see this full set and the matching dies. You will freak like I did.

There's a Little Cowboy in All of Us

The internet is a funny place.

Everyone's first inclination is always to say that it breaks down barriers, makes the world smaller, lets us befriend people in far away lands and find out what we all have in common.

All of this is true.

But it also makes us realize our regional quirks and how strange they seem to other people.

I love hanging out with my Canadian friends at Stampin' Up! events, and we have a blast exploring these things. We never notice them until they are observed by someone from another culture and it's hilarious to see how other people perceive us.

For example, they are baffled by some of our more "cowboy" traits in Texas - our feistiness, our love of hunting and shooting and storytelling. We, on the other hand, are amazed at how polite they are, their confusing cell phone situation and how much better their candy is.

(And yes, I'm talking about Coffee Crisp. I actually think this stuff has crack in it. I'm down to the last one my friend Sue brought me and I could weep thinking about how I won't have another until I force her to fill her suitcase with them when she comes to Leadership in Orlando. And I don't even really eat sweets at all. )

We had so much fun on our last night at dinner that I think I actually got some new laughing muscles. We laughed until we cried that night, and after I got back to Texas and was really missing everyone so much, I figured out what this particular group of people has in common - even more than our passion for stamping and art.

We can laugh at ourselves.

Not only can we, but we LOVE to do it when we're together. I've never met a more good humored bunch of people who are so willing to joke about themselves.

I consider this a cowboy trait. Self-deprecation was one of John Wayne's most endearing traits - it was at the heart of his charm.

You're just so much more human and approachable if you can find the humor in what makes you different from other people.

Life is too short to take yourself seriously.

Do you not love this horse? I made this card for Stacy Morgan's Dare to Get Dirty Challenge, and I love the way it came out! Some of it is accidental. The horse is stamped on watercolor paper, and I lightly watercolored the background. Then, I sponged the edges and sprayed the whole thing with Smooch Spritz.

But then, I decided to watercolor a little more, and when I watercolored on top of the Smooch I got that cool, sort of bleached effect you see on the left. It looks so cool!

I also found out you can use your Aquapainter on top of the white gel pen to spread it out and get that highlight effect I wanted on my horsey.

Oh - and what is that around the edge? Maybe the new gold pen that you'll see in the Holiday Mini catalog in a few days??

Yes, maybe it is.

Well run along little cowboys - it's time for a little Olympics and a visit from the sandman. Oh wait - for you, it's tomorrow. Good morning! :)

I Not Only Have a Pen, I Know How to Use It!

Re-entry is difficult.

It's hard to go from a week with the most amazing and fun friends a girl could ask for in a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city with five star food and STAMPING to real life, I'm not gonna lie.

My week at Convention began with the most incredible home cooked meal and family night at the home of my beloved Mel Hopes. We had chili verde and her homegrown corn, which was officially the best corn I've ever had. It was so crunchy and sweet it was like the Pop Rocks of vegetables.

At dinner, we just chilled - not knowing that we had the three groups of people that were going to be discussed at our keynote for Convention: Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y (millennials).

Our keynote speaker was Jason Dorsey, a fellow Austinite, and he was HYSTERICAL. I laughed the entire time and also learned so much about, for example, why Baby Boomers always carry a pen and why Gen Y only reads the subject line of an email. Instead of wondering why in the heck these Gen Y people live at home until they're 30 now and feel so entitled, we now actually have some tips for how to communicate and work with this group of people with about a TRILLION in spending power. Yes, a trillion dollars. A trillion dollars will buy a LOT of stamps!

I think it was the best, funniest, and most informative keynote we've ever had at a Stampin' Up! convention. I can't wait to read his book.

I have two Baby Boomer siblings, and I am a Gen Xer so it was hilarious to hear the stereotypes about us that were so incredibly accurate. One of the things he said was that you could tell that a Baby Boomer planned the convention, because it started at 8 AM. Then, he said the Stampin' Up! staff asked him if he wanted to come EARLY to check everything out, and of course he said - "Uh, NO."

I, on the other hand, would have come two days early and tested everything three times and prepared two alternate backup plans for a complete systems failure scenario. With a pen. So much changes from one decade to the next.

Like milk delivery, for example. Here's a serious Baby Boomer card that the Gen Ys will never even understand. Especially those cursive letters, which they've never seen and can't read. :)

Two of my favorite Jason quotes were "it's not a text message if I have to SCROLL, mom" and, when he asked his dad why he had a land line, and his dad said "in case of emergency,"  Jason replied: "IT'S ATTACHED TO THE WALL!"

Everything about this year's convention was amazing. Our classes, the Make & Takes, ALL of it. I learned so much and I had so much quality (and by that I mean laughing) time with friends that it *might* last me until January, when we head to Orlando for Leadership.

Loved to Distraction

I got a chance to see a fantastic documentary last night.

It's called Unforeseen, and it's a movie about the development in Austin which impacts the Barton Creek Watershed and Barton Springs Pool.

The primary development the movie deals with is my neighborhood, and so a lot of the issues raised hit pretty darn close to home. The movie's director and many of the stars were watching it with us, and spoke for a while afterwards.

What I came away with is that I believe that we have have loved our city to distraction.

Austin is such a beautiful place, and Barton Springs is downright magical. We love and treasure these things as sacred and consider them to be at the heart of what we love about living here.

But at the same time, we are distracted. We're distracted by the opportunity to live so close to all these things, but just far enough to be able to afford a decent sized home. We are distracted by all the things we want to buy, and see and do on our way to that beautiful pool. We're distracted by great companies that call Austin home and employ us and our friends. And so we take our love for the little jewels of this city for granted as part of that package.

At one point during the movie, they have a beautiful helicopter shot of Central Park and they talk about how crazy the people that wanted to preserve that incredible space inside the city must have sounded to the developers.


If you've never wandered through Central Park or had lunch at the boat house, it needs to go on your bucket list. Because as much as I love all the things you think of when you think of New York, I did indeed leave my heart in Central Park.

It gave us all a lot to think about. Now are the times that it would come in handy to be a Libra, and find balance in all things. :)

But I guess for now, I'll just channel Lady Bird Johnson, and celebrate the kind of growth that brings us flowers, and forget about the kind that brings us big box stores for a while.

Is Your Commute Killing You or Making You Happy? You Pick.

So I've had such an interesting few days, as per usual. I had my stampy class on Saturday, which I LOVE and look forward to every month. I have the best students!

I had to share my fave card of the class with you before I tell you my stories. It's the first time I used Raspberry Ripple and I have to say - I love it! I'm not a fan of rosy shades of red at all, so I was reluctant to even use it, but boy am I glad I did! It looks especially amazing with Crumb Cake and Not Quite Navy.

We just watercolored the blossoms with an aquapainter and the reinker. It's hard to see in this pic, but there's Dazzling Details on the blooms and Crystal Effects on the birdies. So it's a very delicately mixed-media card.

On Friday I got to meet one of the coolest people I've ever met in my life. She's an artist of course, that definitely contributes to her coolness, but her story is amazing. 


As you know, I don't have a daily commute anymore, thank God, because I work from my home office. This has a zillion benefits, not least of which is having furry co-workers. But I used to commute, and I hated it. I absolutely started and ended every day filled with despair, not moving on Mopac. It was an awful, stressful and unproductive time in my life that just drained me of my spirit and creativity. Reclaiming it has changed everything. And it's not just me. Take a gander at this.

Yep. It makes you fat, stressed out heart attacky and divorced. How about THEM apples? 


Well the lady I met on Friday changed the world with her commute. She used to commute an hour and forty five minutes each way every day from Cedar Park - one of our suburbs - to UT, where she worked. So nearly four hours every day on the bus. Trapped. When she described this to me, she used the same word I used and felt about commuting - despair. But she fought her way out. With an invention. And with art.

She knew exactly how much space she had on the bus, and she knew she had time, so she invented this absolutely INGENIOUS lap easel so that she could paint for those long stretches in traffic. It's totally self contained, doesn't require any cleaning supplies or anything that can spill - it's pure, unadulterated genius. 



And paint she did. She painted her way into the Bob Bullock Museum, into Sue Patrick's famous longhorn store, and into a career as an incredibly successful commercial artist.    


Here is a little video of her telling her own story, as the "bus painting artist." She has some very moving stories about her interactions with people during these trips, who were naturally interested in what she was doing. I'm sure their commutes were much less stressful with her there as well. 


I took her little lap easel with me up to my parents' house yesterday to experiment. My brother in law was driving, so I had a good 45 minutes to see if I could come up with a painting. I sat in the back seat, and did just what she did - worked from my imagination. It was the first time I've ever wished Round Rock was farther away. It was pure joy.

Look - a BOY(d)!

I had my stampy class today and it was SO much fun. Some new faces, including my team member Melody's husband Boyd!

I told my girls that my stamping classes are the only ones where you get to see a boy. :)

He didn't stamp with us, but he supervised from across the restaurant. Probably embarrassed the entire time at all the giggling and squealing.

I actually had time to have an amazing latte before everyone got there because I employed the hiney distribution method for my setup, which I really liked and will use again. PS - Blogger's spell check is trying to tell me "hiney" isn't a word. Pfffft.

I always have three projects, and my tables seat about six each, so if I have more than 20 people there, then I have more hineys than I have seats. As I am not independently wealthy or a politician, I do not have the resources to have multiples of all of my supplies for class, so I have to get creative with both hineys and stamps.

So today, I split one of the projects - part of the project was done at one table, and a slower, more tedious fussy cutting and embellishing part was done at another table. So I had seats for everyone the whole time and all the hineys were happy. And I had time to have a coffee.

Gotta love a stampy Caturday.

I had just such a moment today. I'm off today and tomorrow so I'm focusing on things that make me happy - walking, stamping, reading. I made this cute little fella after a leisurely food trailer lunch with my sister and brother in law - oh wait - want a picture?

Yes, these are the best tacos in the world.

Anyway, I came home to play with my new Holiday Mini Catalog goodies, and when I had made a card, I went to take a pic and my camera battery was dead.

Insert space-time continuum here. And a little serendipity.

For some strange reason, I decided to listen to something while waiting for my batteries to charge I had previously posted but hadn't heard in a long time, which was this.


I honestly have no idea why I picked this today, but I've always been so drawn to this performance. It's so passionate and perfect. I never saw anything like this in 6th grade, that's for sure. One of the things I love the most though, is that after you get lost in his soulful rendition of the song, (which is pretty less than average when not performed by him) he stands up, and he's just a little boy again. He was completely transformed by the performance, and by his gift.


If you really listen to the words, though, there is a great lesson in there, enhanced by his complete brilliance.


And no - it's not to stalk a celebrity.


It's career advice.


Don't you wish you could go back in time and have someone tell you to follow the things you were most passionate about until they loved you back? Skip all the other stuff and "stalk" what you love? Not let filler jobs or time or space or people get in the way?


I can tell you from personal experience that life is completely different when you do that. Is it hard? Yes. Is it worth it? Is there a word stronger than yes? Insert that word here. 


You should go out right now and find a kid to tell that to if there's not one in your own house. If that fails you, tell a grownup.

Life is too short not to stalk what you love. :) Make it love you back. Follow it until it does.

Declaration of Independence


IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Bored? Well, get some inner resources!

There were some long, involved discussions this weekend in social media on the topic of childhood, kicked off by this article, called Spoiled Rotten.

It's really an amazing article and got very strong reactions from all my friends.

Many of our observations were the same. For example, when I was little, if my parents had people over, we were sent upstairs for the duration of the event. We were not running around jostling margaritas out of people's hands or pawing the olive tray. Adult events were for adults, and children were elsewhere. Now, that is not the custom.

We were also not really part of the conversation if we were in public with my parents and other adults. They had adult conversations and we either talked to the other miniature humans present or just hushed. :)

There were tons of kid-centric events - it wasn't like we lived in the kid gulag, but there was a very distinct border between adult life and kid life, especially in public.

One of my friends said "we understood we weren't the center of the universe, our parents were." They were, after all, the ones providing us with the Matchbox Cars and Stretch Armstrong, so it seemed quite fair at the time.

We were also expected to go amuse ourselves in the summer and other non-school periods until such time as we were fit to be paid to do something.

The same friend said that if she declared she was bored her father would respond: "Bored? Well - get some inner resources!"

Can you THINK of a better piece of advice for ANY human than that?

That should be on a monument somewhere.

It's funny, because in the tweet before she told me that, I saw this quote come through...


“You can't use up creativity.

Isn't that the truth? I think artists get this because we get into self perpetuating frenzies of creating from time to time. Usually this ends up in some sort of massive shopping spree as well (cough - holiday mini - cough) but we understand how being creative makes us more creative with our very DNA.

This is the thing that a "run off and play" childhood gave me, in my opinion. I created a lot of my universe, and I do still to this day. And it makes me very, very happy.
